Shaw, Bernard, 1856-1950. Dürer sketch with autograph annotations by G.B.S., 1929.
Title:
Dürer sketch with autograph annotations by G.B.S., 1929.
Plate of Durer's "Sketch of the Monument of a Knight and Lady," mounted on cardboard. Written above the plate, in Bernard Shaw's handwriting, is "Not this." An explanation is that this may have been a suggestion for an illustration to Saint Joan, as the Durer plate might well be used for that purpose. Also included is a letter regarding the plate, addressed to James [D.] Hart, from Shaw's secretary, Blanche Patch, 25 July 1929.

Marsh, Jacob Riley. Travel diary through Holland, Belgium, and Germany, 1841 Aug 15- Dec 26.
Title:
Travel diary through Holland, Belgium, and Germany, 1841 Aug 15- Dec 26.
Holograph journal of a four-month tour by the author and his companions through Holland, Belgium, and Germany. Traveling by boat, train, and carriage, they visit churches, cathedrals, museums, and art galleries. In Belgium, the author admires paintings by Rubens and Durer and describes a local Catholic funeral mass and procession of the host. In Wiesbaden, he reflects on a concert by Franz Liszt which he attended. A few days earlier in Germany, he notes that it is the "first time we have been in an English church since our marriage"; and in Frankfurt, he describes the warning he and his companion Harriot receive about the unscrupulous dealings of the chief bookseller, "Hugel." Throughout the diary, the author describes the conditions of the various hotels in which he stayed; purchases he and his companions made, including lithographs of their favorite pictures at the Rue de Tanneurs; the manners and conversation of other travelers and new acquaintances; and social gatherings which include the names of attending European nobility.

Title:
Julius S. Held papers, ca. 1918-1999.
The material provides a broad and detailed study of Held's professional life, his scholarly development, and his working methods. A major portion comprises scholarly correspondence with other art historians, including numerous prominent American and European scholars as well as young colleagues and post-graduate students. Also present is professional correspondence with art dealers, auction houses, museums, and publishing firms, and private collectors. Letters by Held are particularly valuable for their frank assessments of art objects. Included is material documenting Held's research for essays, reviews and articles, his many teaching and lecturing activities, as well as his involvement as an art expert in legal cases. The archive also contains extensive travel notes. A distinct group of material details Held's role in building the collection of Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico. A very large portion of the archive consists of study photographs and other visual documentation of artwork by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Rembrandt, and a vast number of other artists, mainly Dutch and Flemish from the 15th to 18th centuries.

Countess Alida von Krockow letters to publishers [manuscript], 1893-1904.
The collection contains the manuscript of p. 49, of "American characters in German novels." Discusses American types represented in German Literature, particularly the character of the young girl. The collection also contains p. 30 of an untitled essay (last page only). First line: "...take to be great artists, Richard Wagner and Hans Markart, are just the ontrary kind of men to Durer, are sybaritic baggars and self-idolizing blasphemers." Disucsses the characters of various artists. In a letter, 1893 Jan 2, von Krockow writes Houghton Mifflin a lengthy review of the novel "Merlin" (1892) by Paul Heyse. She writes: "Merlin, in short, was for many years the author's mental diary, and unless his present intention not to write his memoirs be given up, the literary student will hardly come into possession of a better guide through certain circumstances of Herr Heyse's literary life than is this romance. It fills a place among his books corresponding to that which "The Mill on the Floss" fills among the writings of George Eliot." She continues to recount most of the plot of the novel. In a 1904 letter to the editor of "The Youth's Companion," [M. A. deWolfe Howe?] von Krockow writes, "I have made a sketch illustrative of 'Whitsuntide Customs in Germany' and have given it to a young artist who is a pupil of Mr. Gibson, to cast into a design fit to serve as an illustration, and will submit the same to you within a few days."
