Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
Title:
Guide to the Daily Worker and Daily World Photographs Collection, 1920-2001
The official organ of the Communist Party, USA, the Daily Worker's editorial positions reflected the policies of the Communist Party. At the same time the paper also attempted to speak to the broad left-wing community in the United States that included labor, civil rights, and peace activists, with stories covering a wide range of events, organizations and individuals in the United States and around the world. As a daily newspaper, it covered the major stories of the twentieth century. However, the paper always placed an emphasis on radical social movements, social and economic conditions particularly in working class and minority communities, poverty, labor struggles, racial discrimination, right wing extremism with an emphasis on fascist and Nazi movements, and of course the Soviet Union and the world-wide Communist movement. The paper has had a succession of names and has been published in varying frequences between daily to weekly over the course of its existence. In 2010 it ceased print publication and became an electronic, online-only, weekly publication titled the People's World. The bulk of the collection consists of printed photographic images produced through a variety of processes, collected by the photography editors of the Daily Worker and its successor newspapers as a means of maintaining an organized collection of images for use in publication. Images of many important people, groups and events associated with the CPUSA and the American Left are present in the collection, as well as images of a wide variety of people, subjects and events not explicitly linked with the CPUSA or Left politics.

Moonwalk One
Title:
Moonwalk One
This film details the comprehensive coverage surrounding the July 1969 launch of Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins to the moon. The film details activities of both the astronauts and mission control during pre-launch and launch sequences, daily activities aboard the spacecraft and the moonwalk, and provides a view of the historical and cultural events of the time. The footage includes clips from science fiction television shows such as "Flash Gordon" and "Buck Rogers," as well as a lengthy segment on American rocket pioneer Robert Goddard. The film also explores some of the critical preliminary stages of the Apollo program, including medical testing of the human body in space conditions, as well as the assembly and testing of space suits as worn by the astronauts.

Records of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 1903 - 2006. Color Photograph Files Relating to Projects, Astronauts, and Events, 1963 - 1965.
Title:
Records of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, 1903 - 2006. Color Photograph Files Relating to Projects, Astronauts, and Events, 1963 - 1965.
This series consists of color photographic coverage of all phases of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) programs in the five principal areas outlined by the National Space Act of 1958; space science and applications, manned spaceflight, launch vehicle development, tracking and data acquisition, and advanced research and technology. The series is comprised of images collected from NASA offices and facilities. Over one half of the images relate directly to the manned spaceflight program, beginning in 1958 with Project Mercury, which produced the first successful manned orbital and suborbital missions launched by the United States. Images taken from Project Mercury (MA-1 through MA-9) missions, as well as from the Mercury Redstone (MR-1 through MR-4) missions, are represented here. These images include test flights with both the Atlas and Redstone boosters, the "Little Joe" unmanned support missions, NASA staff and contractor technicians at work, astronaut training, recovery of the crafts by the U.S. Navy, and post-mission medical and scientific tests performed on both astronauts and their spacecraft alike. Of note is the MR-2 mission, which carried "Ham" the chimpanzee into space for a 16 minute test flight on January 31, 1961. Along with Project Mercury, early phases of the Gemini and Apollo Projects are also shown in this series. The Gemini material is drawn from the project's first three launches (1964 - 1965), and the bulk of it represents test flights, pre-launch activities at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral, Florida, and astronaut activities and gear. By contrast, the bulk of the Apollo images depict artists' concepts and mock-ups of spacecraft, launch vehicles, flight stages, and lunar landing activity. Extensive coverage of the first NASA astronauts, and in particular their activities related to the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo programs, exists in this series. Survival training in desert, jungle, and ocean environments is emphasized. Further training recorded includes simulated gravity and flight situations, geological instruction, and acclimation to space suits and general space conditions. Many portraits and activity shots are included of the original seven astronauts of Project Mercury (M. Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Jr., John Glenn, Jr., Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Walter Schirra, Jr., Alan Shepard, Jr., and Donald "Deke" Slayton), as well as the flight personnel of the Gemini and Apollo projects. Also featured are views of parades and award ceremonies around the country marking the successful return of astronauts to Earth, including several events held at the White House with Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson and on Capitol Hill with U.S. legislators. There are also candid photographs of astronauts with their wives, as well as formal family portraits. Additionally, a significant portion of this series relates to numerous other NASA tracking and data acquisition projects. The unmanned spaceflight data missions are given varying degrees of photographic coverage, ranging from artists' concepts and developmental phases to launch pictures of Biosatellite (Biosat), Echo, Mariner, Nimbus, Pioneer, Ranger, Surveyor, Syncom, Telstar and the Television Infrared Observation Satellite (TIROS). Accordingly, there are also roughly numerous images of elaborate tracking devices and their stations, both domestic and international, which served as nerve centers for the endless flow of information that these missions provided. Such remote locations as Grand Canary Island off the African Coast, Coopers Island, Bermuda, and Carnarvon in Australia are recorded. Of note among the unmanned missions represented in this series is the Explorer Satellite Project, which in 1958 launched the first U.S. artificial satellite, Explorer I. The Explorer VI through XXV satellites are also documented. Also of significance are views of the S-51 (UK 1) satellite, the 1962 launch of which marked the culmination of the first international space effort in history. The photographs show an American Thor - Delta rocket booster launching a British S-51 payload into Earth's orbit. Also documented in this series is the experimental rocket powered X-15 aircraft, which was flown under a joint project by NASA, the Department of Defense, and North American Aviation, Incorporated. Views of X-15 pilots Neil Armstrong and Joseph Walker conducting before and after flight activities appear here, along with artists' concepts of improvements to the X-15 design. A smaller number of images record other experimental projects as well, with the focus being on aircraft design and application. Artists' concepts and models of the Supersonic Commercial Air Transport (SCAT) are shown at the Ames Research Center at Moffett Field, California. Also covered are the M2F2 aircraft and the HL-10 entry vehicle as components of extensive supersonic and hypersonic research projects at the Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. Of further interest are approximately 75 images from the NASA Space Art Program. Begun in September 1962 as a way of capturing and disseminating the impressions of significant American artists, the program peaked with the National Gallery of Art's 1965 "Eyewitness to Space" exhibit, which traveled the country for several years. The images in this series are color photographs of original artwork, chiefly depicting various NASA facilities around the country or their construction. A smaller number of the art works depict launch scenes. All of the art works were drawn or painted between 1962 and 1965. Several images also appear depicting NASA exhibits at the New York World's Fair held in New York City, New York in 1964 and 1965. These exhibits featured equipment from many of NASA's most prominent projects, including an X-15 research aircraft, launch vehicles Saturn, Titan and Atlas, and a Gemini spacecraft.

Universal Newsreel Volume 39, Release 23
The original release sheet reads: DRAMA IN SPACE The most dramatic Space probe in history is the flight of the GEMINI EIGHT. Under Command Pilot Neil Armstrong, the first civilian Astronaut, the GEMINI has David Scott aboard for a planned Space Walk of more than two hours. First on the agenda is a rendezvous with an Agena Rocket launched 101 minutes before the GEMINI is airborne. After that the Space Walk, three other meetings with the Agena and a three-day orbiting voyage. All goes well at first. Both launches are beautiful and the rendezvous takes place on schedule on the fourth orbit. Then trouble less than an hour later. The Agena starts gyrating wildly and the GEMINI has to pull away. With a maneuvering, fuel is exhausted and it is ordered back to earth, and lands in an emergency area south of Japan - right on the button. The voyage of the GEMINI is a tribute to two brave men -- men who are casting our future beyond the bounds of infinity...

Universal Newsreel Volume 39, Release 24
The original release sheet reads: RENDEZVOUS WITH TOMORROW The most dramatic adventure in Space history ends southeast of Okinawa as Astronauts Neil Armstrong and David Scott bring their Gemini Eight capsule down safely. There were three bad hours after their near disaster 185 miles above the earth. Motion pictures made from the capsule show the sighting and linkup with the Agena rocket, the movies showing dramatically how space travel will be accomplished in the future. Then the violent gyrations of Agena and Gemini as the Number 8 Thruster on Gemini short circuits and the Astronauts wrestle their capsule back under control. A happy ending to what might have been a disaster. SPORTS Basketball HOOP UPSET: The crowd at College Park, Maryland, sees a David come out of the West to slay an Eastern Goliath. Texas Western wins the National Collegiate basketball championship by downing the highly-favored Kentucky team 72 to 65. Nobody paid much attention to Texas Western when they entered the tournament, but there was tumult and shouting when the team won the first major sports title Texas Western had ever won...

Color photographs in this series cover all phases of NASA programs in the five principal areas outlined in the National Space Act of 1958: space science and applications, manned spaceflight, launch vehicle development, tracking and data acquisition, and advanced research technology. The series is comprised of images collected from NASA offices and facilities throughout the United States, including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, the Langley Research Center in Virginia, the Ames Research Center in California, the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and the Johnson Space Center in Texas. The main focus of the photographs in this series is manned space flight, with roughly half of the images dedicated to cataloging such missions. The photographic coverage in this series begins with the earliest phases of the Mercury project and continues through the Space Shuttle program, and photographs from each program mission from Mercury Redstone 2 through Space Shuttle 43 (STS-43) are included. Photographs of particular interest relate to the Little Joe II mission (manned by "Sam," a rhesus monkey), the MR-2 mission which carried "Ham" a chimpanzee into space, the first United States manned space mission (MR-3), John Glenn's orbital mission (MA-6), Ed White's first American spacewalk (Gemini-IV), photographs of the Apollo 1 fire, images from Apollo 8 (the first manned flight to orbit the moon), the first moon landing of Apollo 11, concept art related to future missions, and Space Shuttle missions. Also included are photographs from the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (a joint mission with the Soviet Union) and Skylab. Photographs also cover the deployment of and repair of the Hubble Space Telescope, as well as the first shuttle docking with the Russian space station, MIR. Photographs of test launches for the Mercury Redstone, Mercury Atlas, Gemini, Centaur, and Saturn Rockets are included in this series. A series of photographs of test aircraft, aircraft design, and research flights are also maintained in this series. Of note are images of the X-15 rocket-powered aircraft--which was flown under a joint project by NASA, the Department of Defense, and North American Aviation Incorporated, and set the speed record for a manned aircraft flight (mach 6.72) in 1967. Views of X-15 pilots Neil Armstrong and Joseph Walker conducting pre- and post-flight inspections appear here, along with conceptualized design improvements to the aircraft. A smaller number of photographs record other experimental projects as well, with an emphasis on aircraft design and application. Additionally, a portion of this series relates to numerous other NASA tracking and data acquisition projects. The unmanned space flight data missions receive varying degrees of photographic coverage, ranging from concept art and development to launch pictures of Application Technology Satellites (ATS), Mariner, Nimbus, Pioneer, Ranger, and Surveyor spacecraft. Accordingly, there are various images of Earth landscapes and structures and photographic images of the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. Extensive coverage of NASA astronauts, facilities, and commemorative events are also held in this series. Numerous photographs relate to astronaut training for the Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, and Shuttle programs, which include survival training in the desert, jungle, and oceans, as well as pilot training, mission specific training, and familiarization with a non-gravity environment. Portraits of astronauts include, but are not limited to, the Mercury Seven Astronauts (M. Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Jr., John Glenn, Jr., Donald "Deke" Slayton, Virgil "Gus" Grissom, Walter Schirra, and Alan Shepard, Jr.), Neil Armstrong, Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, Thomas K. Mattingly, Sally Ride, and Christa McAuliffe. Additional photographic coverage includes images of NASA facilities throughout the nation and public exhibitions at the 1964-65 World's Fair in New York City. Another section of this series includes miscellaneous photographs which are not tied to any specific mission or category, but demonstrate NASA's ongoing quest to expand their capabilities, move to new horizons, and explore deeper into space. Included are a series of images of concept art from 1969 and 1970 for an eventual mission to Mars. Other pieces of concept art found in this series are from the mid-1970s and depict vehicles and habitats for a series of space colonies. Other miscellaneous photographs contain images of geographic surveys, biological experiments, satellite images, satellite launches, renewable energy facilities, and a sky diver. Finally, photographs of NASA celebrations, commemorations, and awards are also found in this series. Images from the five- and twenty-year anniversaries of the Apollo 11 mission are included, the ten-year anniversary of John Glenn's orbital flight around the earth, as well as photographs of Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush awarding medals to several astronauts at ceremonies at the White House, as well as images from several White House dinners attended by astronauts and their families. Other photographs included within this series include: rocket engines and designs and international space programs.

Title:
Apollo 11 Mission Commentary 1903-1962
The spacecraft Apollo 11 blasted off from Cape Kennedy, Fla., on July 16, 1969, with the mission to become the first to "perform a manned lunar landing and return." After entering lunar orbit on July 20, the landing module separated from the command module (piloted by Michael Collins) and descended to the lunar surface. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. (Buzz) Aldrin made a soft landing in the Sea of Tranquility, and following a quick meal -- but postponing a scheduled sleep -- they exited to become the first men to walk on the surface of the moon. The Apollo 11 collection contains transcripts of communications between Mission Control in Houston, Tex., and the astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin during the first landing on the moon, July 20, 1969. Divided into two segments, both titled "Apollo 11 Mission Commentary," these transcripts includes a record of transmissions during the landing itself (27p.) and during the first moonwalk (27p.). Both are autographed by Armstrong. Eagle Columbia
