Mission Analysis Files, ca. 1969 - ca. 1972

This series consists of memorandums, reports, publications, graphs, maps, and photographs relating to the post-mission analysis of several manned spaceflight missions to the Moon including Apollo 11, Apollo 12, Apollo 14, and Apollo 16. As such, some of the records in this series document the collaborative work of scientists and personnel at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the United States Geological Survey (USGS). Subjects covered in these materials include, but are not limited to: lunar exploration, lunar sample collection, the geochemical composition of lunar rock samples and lunar regolith, the geology of lunar landing sites, astronaut traverses, lunar module performance, and surface temperature data. Of particular note, in the file entitled, "[Apollo 11 45-Day Report, Preliminary Map of EVA (Extra-Vehicular Activity) Photographs and Television Pictures]" are Apollo 11 geological traverse maps illustrating the foot paths of astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin, Jr. relative to the lunar module at Tranquility Base.

Apollo 12 was the sixth manned mission in the Apollo program and the second to land on the moon. Its crew included Pete Conrad, commander; Richard Gordon, command module pilot; and Alan Bean, lunar module pilot. To improve the quality of television pictures from the Moon, a color camera was carried on Apollo 12 (unlike the monochrome camera that was used on Apollo 11).
