Anne Tyler (b. 1941) is an award-winning author, born in Minneapolis, Minn. She spent her youth in and near Raleigh, N.C.. She graduated from Duke University and completed graduate work in Russian studies at Columbia University. In 1963, Tyler married Taghi Modarressi. In the following year, they moved to Montreal, Canada, where Tyler wrote and worked in the McGill University Law Library. The couple had two daughters. During this time, Tyler began working with editor Judith Jones of Alfred A. Knopf publishing house. In 1967, the family settled in Baltimore, and Tyler sets most of her novels there.
Tyler has published novels, short stories, and children's books. Her novels include If Morning Ever Comes, The Tin Can Tree, A Slipping-Down Life, Celestial Navigation, Searching for Caleb, Earthly Possessions, Morgan's Passing, Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, The Accidental Tourist, Breathing Lessons, Saint Maybe, Ladder of Years, A Patchwork Planet, Back When We Were Grownups, The Amateur Marriage, Digging to America, and Noah's Compass . She has collaborated with her daughter Mitra, an illustrator, on two children's books: Tumble Tower and Timothy Tugbottom Says No! .
Tyler has received recognition for many of her literary works. Among her awards are the National Book Critics Circle Award, received in 1985 for The Accidental Tourist, and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, received in 1989 for Breathing Lessons .

Reynolds Price was a novelist, short story writer, poet, dramatist, essayist, translator, and James B. Duke Professor of English at Duke University, where he taught creative writing and literature beginning in 1958. He was an alumnus of Duke and of Oxford University, which he attended on a Rhodes Scholarship. He received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and his books were nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Correspondence, writings, serials, clippings, speeches, interviews, legal and financial papers, photographs, audiovisual materials, and digital materials about Price's career and personal life. Personal and professional correspondence document his education at Duke University, especially his studies under William Blackburn; his period abroad as a Rhodes Scholar at Merton College, Oxford; and his literary work and interaction with other authors, including Stephen Spender, Eudora Welty, and Allan Gurganus. Elizabeth Evans was born in 1935 and grew up in Statesville, N.C. She received her doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1970 and subsequently taught literature at Georgia Institute of Technology. She authored books on various writers, including (1981), (1989), (1993), and (1997). The papers of Elizabeth Evans are letters and other materials relating to prominent women writers, including Doris Betts, Josephine Jacobsen, Maxine Kumin, Sally Fitzgerald, May Sarton, Anne Tyler, and Cecil Dawkins. There are also letters from Anne Tyler's mother, Phyllis Mahon Tyler. Letters from Doris Betts cover a wide variety of subjects. They include critical comment and advice on Evans's literary efforts, as well as discussion about day-to-day obligations of professional writers and news of mutual friends. Also included are drafts of articles about Betts, draft material from Evans's book about Betts, and correspondence with others about Betts; interviews Evans conducted with Betts; and correspondence of Betts with others, including Penelope Presley, a high school student to whom Betts wrote about creative writing. Letters from Josephine Jacobsen and her husband, Eric Jacobsen, relate mostly to personal matters. Letters from Anne Tyler discuss both personal matters and topics relating to Evans's book about Tyler's work. Letters from Phyllis Mahon Tyler also primarily relate to Evans's Tyler book. Letters from Maxine Kumin, Sally Fitzgerald, and Cecil Dawkins deal mostly with aspects of each author's career and professional development, but there is also information about their everyday activities. May Sarton letters relate primarily to Evans's book on Sarton's work. Also included are manuscripts, clippings, and photographs relating to Evans's correspondents. The Abraham S. Burack collection consists almost completely of correspondence to Burack and other staff members of The Writer magazine. These letters date from 1922 to 1997. The collection contains letters to Cheuse chiefly from other writers about their work and his, other authors, and mutual friends. With these are manuscripts of articles, short stories and reviews by Cheuse, the manuscript of his novel "Rabbi Guatemala" later published as "The grandmothers' club", and the page proofs of "Fall out of heaven." There are also some financial papers, research notes, photographs, reviews of three of Cheuse's books, correspondence from publishers concerning his work, and printed miscellany. Manuscripts sent to Cheuse by other authors include "An introduction to Alan Cheuse" by George Garrett. Tapes of Alan Cheuse reading from his works and appearing on a public radio show complete the collection.
