Deeds of, or related to, the De Peyster family (1701-1852), including indentures, abstracts of titles, and land surveys for property chiefly in New York State. Also several college notebooks of Frederick De Peyster, Peter Mackie and others for ancient geography, belles lettres, and physics; two personal notebooks, one probably belonging to Frederick; a notebook containing satiric addresses; and a list of subscribers to a New Year's Eve gathering in New York in 1827. Frederick De Peyster and John Watts are among the many names appearing on the deeds.

Title: Land papers, 1728-1868.

The collection consists of legal instruments for the acquisition and conveyance of real property, such as Letters Patent (civilian and military) and their supporting documents, deeds of many kinds (generally using the English procedure of Lease and Release), mortgages, bankruptcy indentures, a prenuptial agreement, and agreement settling an estate in new trustees but also intended to protect a woman's rights to her legacy, and a guardianship agreement by a Loyalist appointing trustees for his children. Various other papers relating to property and estates include tenant leases, bonds, surveys, maps, memoranda, lists, affidavits, powers of attorney, certificates, abstracts and exemplifications, indemnifications, and some correspondence. Encompassing the years 1728-1868, the documents were created primarily in two periods: 1761-1775 and the 1790's. There are only a few scattered items after 1829. Some dated after Banyar's death pertain to earlier proceedings; the remainder may be family papers.

This collection of papers consists of diverse record types but all the records are related to the Watts, DePeyster and Johnson families. Among the papers are: a list of 58 persons banished from New York State in 1779 for their loyalist sympathies, several deeds regarding lands of the estate of Sir Peter Warren, letters to John Watts, Jr. from his brother-in-law John Johnson and an affadavit to Johannis DePeyster regarding the navigability of Wood Creek dated March 4, 1725.

Title: Leake and Watts Children's Home Records 1802-1983 (bulk 1831-1949)

The collection contains records, 1831-1983 (bulk 1831-1949) of the Leake and Watts Children's Home (originally the Leake and Watts Orphan House) and records of two other child care agencies that merged into it: The Orphans' Home and Asylum of the Protestant Episcopal Church in New York (1851-1947), and the Sevilla-Hopewell Society (1947-1948). The Sevilla-Hopewell Society was a merger of The Sevilla Home for Children (1889-1947) with The Hopewell Society of Brooklyn (1921-1947), originally named The Society for the Aid of Friendless Women and Children (1869-1921). The collection contains records going back to the founding of each organization. The collection also contains unrelated records related to land in Masonville New York, 1802-1865.

Robert Watts papers, 1692-1839 (bulk 1778-1839), consisting of deeds and legal documents, as well as family correspondence and other miscellaneous papers. There are wills, deeds, field notes, bills of exchange and miscellaneous legal documents related to the family's landholdings in New York City, New York State, and New Jersey. There is also a paper containing the Lord's Prayer in Chinese, written in 1839 by Yong Mon-Chun Akum, a Chinese Christian who was the first foreign student to attend Williams College. Most of the correspondence relates to the Hon. John Watts; his sons, Robert and John Jr.; and Robert's sons Robert Jr. and Dr. John Watts. Included in the collection are 73 letters from the senior John Watts to his sons, written from London during 1778-1789; 23 letters from Dr. John Watts to his father, Robert, written from London and Edinburgh, 1808-1810; 15 letters from Ann (Watts) Kennedy, daughter of the senior John Watts, and 56 letters from her husband, Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis, during 1784-1792, to Robert Watts; 44 letters to Robert Watts from Jonathan Mallet, written from London and other English towns; and other family and business correspndence.
