Robert Watts papers, 1692-1839 (bulk 1778-1839), consisting of deeds and legal documents, as well as family correspondence and other miscellaneous papers. There are wills, deeds, field notes, bills of exchange and miscellaneous legal documents related to the family's landholdings in New York City, New York State, and New Jersey. There is also a paper containing the Lord's Prayer in Chinese, written in 1839 by Yong Mon-Chun Akum, a Chinese Christian who was the first foreign student to attend Williams College. Most of the correspondence relates to the Hon. John Watts; his sons, Robert and John Jr.; and Robert's sons Robert Jr. and Dr. John Watts. Included in the collection are 73 letters from the senior John Watts to his sons, written from London during 1778-1789; 23 letters from Dr. John Watts to his father, Robert, written from London and Edinburgh, 1808-1810; 15 letters from Ann (Watts) Kennedy, daughter of the senior John Watts, and 56 letters from her husband, Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassillis, during 1784-1792, to Robert Watts; 44 letters to Robert Watts from Jonathan Mallet, written from London and other English towns; and other family and business correspndence.
