Consists of record books, correspondence, reports, plans, and manuscripts that document the acquisitions and circulation of the Brown University Library; the Librarians' duties and activities; the Library Committee; and library buildings. The Acquisition records series includes records for the libraries of the Brown University United Brothers Society and of the Philermenian Society in the 1849-1857 accession book. The Acquisition records series, Department libraries accession books subseries includes books acquired by the biology, botany, chemistry, classics, drawing, economics, English, physics, romance languages, and sociology departments for their own libraries. The Library catalogs series contains a catalog of books ordered from England in 1783; a Rough draft of the old college library taken in 1784; and catalogs for holdings dated 1793-1826 and 1824-1837? There is an 1837 catalog arranged by classifications and an 1850 catalog of patristic works. The Circulation records document the books borrowed by undergraduates from 1787 to 1895, by graduates from 1866 to 1895, and by Corporation members, the university president, professors, tutors, graduates, and clergy from 1788 to 1897. The Circulation records for 1842-1859 also include notations by the Librarian about books sent to the bindery. The Library correspondence series contains information about the construction of the John Hay Library and the acquisition of the library of Hammond Lamont. The construction of the John Hay Library is also documented in the papers of Koopman. The Reports of the Librarian series contains annual reports for 1825-1841 by Librarian Horatio Gates Bowen and monthly reports dating from 1853-1910. Shelf lists describe how materials were arranged in the library when it was situated in Manning Hall in 1870 and then the arrangement of materials by subject in the library situated in Robinson Hall in ca. 1878. The papers of Charles Coffin Jewett, Librarian from 1842 to 1848, consists primarily of letters received. There is correspondence about Jewett's publication of the Catalogue of the library of Brown University in 1843. Theron Metcalf wrote to Jewett about purchases for the library and the Metcalf collection. There are letters from Joseph Henry about Jewett's position with the Smithsonian Institution. Jewett's passport documents his book buying trip to Europe from 1843 to 1845. The papers of Reuben Aldridge Guild, Librarian from 1848 to 1893, include manuscripts for Guild's publications about Brown University; accounts of religious revivals that occurred from 1847-1858 and from 1884-1893; as well as correspondence and other materials about the administration of the library. There are manuscripts for Guild's published work, Chaplain Smith and the Baptists and his unpublished 1897 revision of History of Brown University. The History includes the history of the library (1769-1893), the histories of various student religious and literary societies, a chapter on the college lands, and another on religious revivals in the University. Guild's papers also include a document addressed to the Corporation stating the reasons for increasing the Librarian's salary (ca. 1860), plans for a new library building (now Robinson Hall) (1870-1875), and accounts of a library theft. The papers of Harry Lyman Koopman, Librarian from 1893 to 1930, are the largest corpus of librarians' papers (1264 letters). Correspondents in Koopman's papers include : Herman Carey Bumpus, Everett Colby, Clarkson Abel Collins, John Cotton Dana, Sam Walter Foss, William Eaton Foster, William W. Keen, Alfred Gideon Langley, and William Leete Stone.
