James Mullen Christmas card collection
The James Mullen Christmas card collection measures 0.4 linear feet and dates from 1955 to 2021. The collection includes 80 original Christmas cards and accompanying prints created by artists, consisting of etchings, drawings, silkscreen images, watercolors and collages. Nineteen of the cards were created by Mullen and sent to his colleagues. Also included are studies by Mullen and original accompanying zinc plate and linoleum blocks used to make his cards. Collection dates from 1949-1991 and comprises photographs, negatives, and contact prints and related materials assembled by African American photojournalist Griff Davis, concerning Langston Hughes, Hale Woodruff, and Charles Alston, all prominent African American writers, poets, or artists, and the Palmer Memorial Institute, a private junior and senior high school for African Americans in Sedalia, N.C. The audiovisual components include home movies and nine color and black and white 16mm films dating from the fifties, taken in Liberia by Davis during part of William V.S. Tubman's presidency. Films depict a wide range of subjects, activities and events, including the country's people, industry, leaders, and rural life. Other Griff Davis images in the collection are found in an album entitled "Progress in Liberia, November 1949 - February 1950," containing twenty large black and white gelatin silver prints with typed captions; the album was assembled to promote a partnership between the government of Liberia and Liberia Mining Company. Acquired as part of the Archive of Documentary Arts at Duke University.

Karl E. Fortess interviews with artists
The taped interviews with artists by Karl Fortress measure 5.6 linear feet and date from circa 1963 to 1985. The interviews consist of 205 cassettes containing 268 interviews, averaging 35 minutes, of painters, sculptors, and printmakers. Fortess conducted seventy-nine of the interviews as a pilot for and as part of a grant from Office of Education, U.S. Dept. of Health, Education, and Welfare at Boston University's School of Applied Arts. Included in the collection is the final report for the grant, June 1968, summarizing the objective was "to develop a library of taped interviews with contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists, such interviews to be concerned with questions of technical, professional and personal interest" and the evaluation process and outcomes of the value of the interviews as a teaching resource for faculty and students. The interviews followed guidelines to include background, training, work patterns, interests, teachers, influences, teaching experiences, attitudes toward teaching, and opinions on art trends. Fortess continued interviewing artists upon completion of the grant, including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community.

This small collection about Hale Woodruff consists primarily of materials accumulated by Winifred Stoelting in doing research for her dissertation, "Hale Woodruff, Artist and Teacher: Through the Atlanta Years" (Emory University, 1978). Upon completion of the dissertation, Stoelting donated her research materials to the Woodruff Library at Atlanta University Center. These materials consist of audiocassette tapes of interviews with Woodruff's students and colleagues, correspondence from Woodruff and others, and slides of his work. Among these are photocopies of letters from Hale Woodruff to Millicent Dobbs Jordan in reference to a commissioned work, "Cinque Exhorts his Captives". The collection also includes copies of brochures for the mural "The Art of the Negro", and programs from In Memory of Hale Aspacio Woodruff (1900-1980) and the accompanying exhibit "Homage to Hale Woodruff", held at Atlanta University in 1981.
