Wharton, Edward Clifton, 1827-1891. Edward Clifton Wharton family papers, 1819-1947 (bulk 1819-1901).

Papers of four generations of the Wharton family are comprised of correspondence, manuscript writings, manuscript volumes, photographs, printed items and broadsides. Correspondence includes letters of Edward Clifton Wharton, his father; Franklin Wharton and other relatives, especially members of the Baylor family. The Baylor letters provide information on early Texas history, Mexican relations, the Civil War in Louisiana and Texas, Indian frontier wars and affairs, and the California Gold Rush. Correspondence of Edward C. Wharton reflects his close association with prominent writers and historians. Included is a long series of letters from Louisiana historian Charles Gayarre. Papers of Franklin Wharton pertain to his migration in 1825 from Frederickstown, Maryland, to the Arkansas Territory; his duties at Fort Smith including his service as postmaster; and as lieutenant colonel in the Crawford County Regiment of the Arkansas Territory. Among the manuscript volumes are an address book (1886-1887); notebook entries concerning the Confederate States Navy and Pierre Soule (1887); diaries of Edward C. Wharton with entries concerning the New Orleans Exposition (March 1886) and a visit to General Beauregard (June 1886); the travel diary (1825) of Franklin Wharton; and the diary (1893) of Jennie P. Wharton recording her illness, the birth and death of her infant daughter, and New Orleans opera and theater. Memorandum books of Edward C. Wharton pertain to his association with the PICAYUNE (1875) and newspaper advertising. Included is a list of letters to the TIMES-PICAYUNE, a travel expense account, orders for WAR of BACHELORS, a listing of advertisements, and genealogical notes concerning the Louisiana Goodmans and Franklin Wharton (1882-1884). Manuscript writings consist of published and unpublished novels, plays and articles by Edward C. Wharton. Among the photographs are several portraits of Wharton and Baylor family members including a daguerreotype of Colonel George Wythe Baylor, aide-de-camp to General Albert Sidney Johnson (1861), photographs of General John G. Walker, Lieutenant Richard Dowling and Albert Pike. Broadsides include the Louisiana Senate Roll for 1867, two form letters from Dozier G. Hebert and a list of military personnel taking part in the war "West of the Mississippi." Printed items contain newspaper clippings, principally from Texas,several Southern newspapers, pamphlets including BATTLE of SAN JACINTO and the SAN JACINTO CAMPAIGN by L.W. Kemp and Ed Kilman (1947), 1st Louisiana Regiment roster (n.d.) and a Baylor College commencement address (1884). Other printed materials consist of periodicals and printed volumes, among which are REPUBLIC of TEXAS by Clarence Wharton and Anne H. Wharton's GENEALOGY of the WHARTON FAMILY.

The correspondence series has been divided into three subseries: letters and records concerning the Dornier family and farm business; letters and memoranda concerning Jules A. Dornier Jr.'s POW labor contracts; and letters, receipts, and other records from Lillian Dornier's communications with friends, cousins, and former POW laborers and their families. The ephemera series consists of various items relating to several members of the Dornier family, including prayers cards, a map of New Orleans, and minstrel show programs.

Early papers include legal documents pertaining to land sales in St. James Parish, La., and the succession of Nelson Paul Himel. Papers also include stock certificates (1911), land plats (1921, n.d.), and historical material relating to the history of St. James Parish, St. Michael Catholic Church in Convent, La., and St. Mary Chapel, Union, La. Correspondence includes a typed letter from Warren Dicharry, in which he describes teaching in China (March 19, 1949). Manuscript volumes consist of a record book (1883-1884), daybook pertaining to school events (1947), ledger (1917-1920), school notebook (1905) and scrapbooks (1872-1971). [Notebook and scrapbooks are available on microfilm]. Printed material comprises the majority of this collection. These items include leather postcards, newspaper clippings (in French), First Communion cards (1908), an advertising pamphlet (1918), pamphlets relating Louisiana citrus (1958), New Orleans (1948), and the Louisiana legislature (1960). Other printed items include a copy of THE STORY OF LOUISIANA by John Lambremont (n.d.), a biographical sketch of John D. Lambremont (Nov. 12, 1978), a bible (1899), collecting cards depicting young women (ca. 1914), a print of LE COUVENT DU SACRE COEUR (1974), and late 19th century U. S. currency. Among the photographs are copy prints of Nelson P. Himel (1875), P. M. Lambremont, St. Michael Church, Sacred Heart Convent, Convent, La., Uncle Sam Plantation house, and Jefferson College, Convent, La (1910, n.d.).

The Charles E. de la Vergne Memorial Collection documents the activities of de la Vergne family members in Louisiana from 1719, as well as the world of banking and finance in New Orleans. It contains correspondence and military orders (1814-1815) pertaining to the defense of New Orleans during the War of 1812; correspondence (1835-1839) regarding Jefferson College in Convent, La.; and letters of Jules Lavergne (1841-1842) discussing political figures in Washington, D.C., Congressional legislation, and presidential policies on fiscal matters and tariffs. The Schmidt Family Papers (1830-1872) pertain to family and business matters, largely in Europe. The collection also includes genealogical materials on the de la Vergne, Bermudez, Dreaux, Landry de Freneuse, Schmidt, Seghers, and Villeré families, as well as a microfilmed copy of C.V. Lavoisne's Complete Genealogical, Historical, Chronological, and Geographical Atlas (Philadelphia: M. Carey and Son, 1820).

The business and professional papers concern the operation of Peytavin's plantation and law practice from the 1880s to the 1930s. Papers prior to 1842 are derived principally from litigations involving Peytavin family members. Letterpress copybooks, ledgers, and time books record business correspondence and transactions. The personal papers include correspondence, manuscript copies of poems, songs, speeches, historical sketches, and other materials. Notebooks, scrapbooks of theatrical productions and historical events, newspaper clippings, maps, photograph albums, invitations, certificates, diplomas, printed items, and music books are included. The theater, opera, and concert stage of New Orleans are fairly well represented by copies of programs and other ephemera.

The collection consists of correspondence and business papers of the Tauzin family. Items related to plantation management include slave bills of sale (1834); account sheets; receipts for wages received by the overseer of Fleauz Vaches Plantation owned by E.O. Blanchard (1841); statements from cotton factor, Miltenberger & Pollock; tax receipts; and a payroll of laborers employed by Marcelin Tauzin on Cadnette Plantation (1866). Correspondence includes letters of family members and friends (many in French) concerning personal matters and education. Letters from Constance, Amelia, Minnie, and Lelia concern the Convent of the Sacred Heart (1877-1886). Letters of Brignon Tauzin were written from Jefferson College. Letters from friends, M. Doremus and Teresa C. Gough, discuss religion. Letters from Henrie L. Briggs of Galveston, Texas, concern his work and wages at Galveston Oil Company (1882-1885). Papers from 1890 to 1844 consist of letters received by Lelia Dugger (nee Tauzin) and Ambrose Tauzin, and bills and letters of M.B. Tauzin. Manuscript volumes include 5 cashbooks (1872-1910) and 5 notebooks (1857-1889). The notebooks contain accounts of personal expenses of Ismerie Brignon, recipes, genealogial notes, and lecture notes.
