Marcelin Tauzin and family papers, 1834-1944.

The collection consists of correspondence and business papers of the Tauzin family. Items related to plantation management include slave bills of sale (1834); account sheets; receipts for wages received by the overseer of Fleauz Vaches Plantation owned by E.O. Blanchard (1841); statements from cotton factor, Miltenberger & Pollock; tax receipts; and a payroll of laborers employed by Marcelin Tauzin on Cadnette Plantation (1866). Correspondence includes letters of family members and friends (many in French) concerning personal matters and education. Letters from Constance, Amelia, Minnie, and Lelia concern the Convent of the Sacred Heart (1877-1886). Letters of Brignon Tauzin were written from Jefferson College. Letters from friends, M. Doremus and Teresa C. Gough, discuss religion. Letters from Henrie L. Briggs of Galveston, Texas, concern his work and wages at Galveston Oil Company (1882-1885). Papers from 1890 to 1844 consist of letters received by Lelia Dugger (nee Tauzin) and Ambrose Tauzin, and bills and letters of M.B. Tauzin. Manuscript volumes include 5 cashbooks (1872-1910) and 5 notebooks (1857-1889). The notebooks contain accounts of personal expenses of Ismerie Brignon, recipes, genealogial notes, and lecture notes.

Marcelin Tauzin was a planter of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Marcelin's daughters, Constance, Amelia, Minnie, and Lelia, attended Convent of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Brignon Tauzin attended Jefferson College in Convent, Saint James Parish. Other family members included Octavie, Ambrose, Joseph, and Ismerie.
