Autograph manuscript circular letter from the Spanish government to the Viceroy of Peru (Teodoro de Croix) and signed by Antonio Porlier. Sent to all the heads of the Spanish colonial government in response to the Russian Empress Catherine's request of Spanish Prime Minister Count Floridablanca that grammars and dictionaries of various Indian languages, as well as Philippine languages, be procured for her. Additionally, she requested that a list of over 400 words (which is included in the letter) be translated for her into all possible dialects spoken in North and South America.

Charles III, King of Spain, 1716-1788. Documents pertaining to the rebellion of Tupac Amaru, and to other political and ecclesiastical affairs of Peru 1779-1791.

Title: Documents pertaining to the rebellion of Tupac Amaru, and to other political and ecclesiastical affairs of Peru 1779-1791.

Several documents concern the role of Juan Manuel Moscoso y Peralta, the bishop of Cuzco, in the Indian rebellion led by Tupac Amaru in 1780. In the draft of his petition to Charles III, dated April 19, 1785 in Lima, Moscoso tries to clear himself of charges of treason for his support of Tupac Amaru's uprising. He asks that the king's council examine the documents which will prove his innocence, and that the case be heard in open court. A copy of a letter of Feb. 19, 1785 from Moscoso to Teodoro de Croix, viceroy of Peru, with Croix's reply of Feb. 23, concerns those documents to be forwarded to the king on the bishop's behalf. There is also an anonymous letter from a citizen of Cuzco to his friend in Potosí, dated Nov. 14, 1783, in which the author refutes charges made against Moscoso for his conduct in the Tupac Amaru affair. A letter of Aug. 27, 1781 from Moscoso to Agustín de Jáuregui, viceroy of Peru, describes the state of his diocese following the rebellion. Moscoso pleads for clemency for the Indians, and hopes to insure tranquility by strengthening church relations with the influential Indian caciques. Other documents include a copy of a cédula real dated Feb. 13, 1791 in Madrid, from Charles IV, responding to a request from the Audiencia of Cuzco to publish Ignacio de Castro's Relación de la fundación de la Real Audiencia del Cuzco en 1788. The execution of the royal order is dated Sept. 9, 1791 by the Audiencia secretary, Francisco de la Serna. Finally, there is a signed letter of Feb. 28, 1779 from viceroy Manuel de Guirior to Castro, appointing him rector of the Real Colegio de San Ignacio de Cuzco.
