Henry Bohn was born on June 22, 1916 to Henry A. Bohn and Margaret Deist Bohn of Oak Park, Illinois. He enlisted in the Army in 1941 and trained at Fort Knox, Fort Benning and Fort Bragg. P.F.C. Bohn served in North Africa and Southern Europe. He died in November of 2010 in Oak Park, Illinois.
Henry George Bohn (1796-1884), bookseller and publisher, by 1862 had completed his major publishing enterprises. His sons were not following in the business, so he gradually sold his bookselling and publishing ventures and stock. In 1864 he sold his library series to Bell & Daldry, later Bell & Co.
Richard Griffin & Co. was located at Warwick Square, London, 1854-1858, then resided at 10 Stationers Hall Court 1859-1861, followed by Griffin Bohn & Co. at the same address 1861-1862. The business Charles Griffin & Co. also resided at 10 Stationers Hall Court 1862-1881, and elsewhere (address unknown) after 1881.

Title:
Papers of George Palmer Putnam [manuscript], 1814-1872.
The papers consist of letters written by Putnam to business associates and friends, particularly J. Lorimer Graham, Jr. Letters to Graham regard Union League Club meetings and introductions to English acquaintances. Letters pertaining to his publishing business discuss possible articles for Putnam's Monthly Magazine including a rejection of one by [Charles Carroll?] Everett, Pierre Munro Irving's biography of Washington Irving, Frank Moore's "Rebellion Record" and the stagnant book trade of 1861. There is also a letter, 1901, from George Haven Putnam to Gustavus Myers declining to publish his history of the great American fortunes as it would be objectionable to family members, particularly Helen Gould.

Title:
Autograph letters signed from John Murray, London, to John Wilson Croker [manuscript], 1838-1852?
(1-5) letters from John Murray the elder and (6-23) from his son. Letters deal with Shakespearean matters and were written from Albemarle Street. (1) Murray hopes Croker does not feel he is encumbering him with tracts about Shakespeare, and he sends the first volume of Harness' Shakespeare. (2) concerns Dr. C. Severn and the diary of John Ward. (3) concerns a manuscript entitled "New illustrations of the works of Shakspeare." Also, with (3), a short note in French references an autograph of Marat. (4) mentions that "it is supposed that Steevens - that Puck of literature had access to the papers which Collier discovered and that he forged the letter of Lord Southampton." (8) refers to Knight's/Collier's Shakespeare, Jackson's "Restorations" and Caldecott's Hamlet and As you like it. (9) mentions Richardson's Essays on Shakespeare. (11) indicates that "the second folio in Bohn's Catalogue has been disposed of" and says that Act IV, scene 3 of Taming of the Shrew begins "Enter Catharina & Grumio." (12) refers to Bohn's Catalogue and Malone's edition of Shakespeare. (13) expresses interest in obtaining a correct copy of Shakespeare's epitaph from Stratford. (14) refers to Knight and Collier's Shakespeare and Alexander Dyce's upcoming critique of both editors. (16) mentions Dyce's critique of Collier. (17) and (18) refer to the loan of publications of the Shakespeare Society. (19) mentions that he is sending Twiss' index, to be followed by Collier and Halliwell. (20), (22) and (23) all deal with Collier's discovery of annotations in the second folio.

Bohn, Henry G. (Henry George), 1796-1884. Indenture to Jessica Jane Rae Griffin [legal document], 1862.
Title:
Indenture to Jessica Jane Rae Griffin [legal document], 1862.
Assignment by Bohn of Stationers Hall Court, Parternoster Row, London, publisher, to Jessica Jane Rae or Griffin, widow of Charles Griffin, and to the other executors of Charles Griffin, of his quarter share in the bookselling and publishing partnership of Griffin Bohn & Co., set up 1 Jan. 1861. Signed by Bohn, Jessica Jane Rae Griffin, William Collins (publisher, Glasgow), and William Ambrose (writer, Glasgow). The document gives background details, including: the partnership between Bohn and Charles Griffin (also described as publisher, of Stationers Hall Court) was set up with £5,000 capital from Bohn and £15,000 from Griffin as minimum; the partnership was for 20 years, but Griffin died 5 Aug. 1862; and the business premises were in Stationers Hall Court, where Richard Griffin & Co. formerly traded, and was owned by Charles Griffin solely. In addition, Bohn declined the option he had of buying his partner's share upon his death; the executors therefore agreed with Bohn to buy his share for £5,500.

Autograph letter signed from Richard Grant White, New York, to Henry G. Bohn [manuscript], 1863 May 27.
Richard Grant White's retained copy. Apologizes for writing a letter, the printed copy of which he enclosed and states "the mistake which it corrects is of so extraordinary a nature, & [is] so harmful to me that some such step was unavoidable." Unclear the substance of the correction, but later annotation by White states "Sent -- No correction made -- no apology. May 1879."
