Correspondence, poetry, and scrapbooks kept by Ella Giles Ruddy, a Wisconsin author. Correspondence for 1887 contains letters from Clara Barton, Edward Everett Hale, Rutherford B. Hayes, and others addressed to Mrs. Ruddy's father, H. H. Giles, a member of the Wisconsin State Board of Charities and Reform; and a scrapbook of clippings, 1877-1886, relates to Mr. Giles' career in public-welfare work. However, most of the letters were written to Mrs. Ruddy by other contemporaries in literature and the arts: Rasmus B. Anderson, Hjalmar H. Boyesen, Hiram Corson, Zona Gale, Charles Noble Gregory, Hattie Tyng Griswold, Vinnie Ream Hoxie, Aubertine Woodward Moore, Eben E. Rexford, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, and Robert Wilson Burns. Original signed manuscripts of poems were written by Robert Wilson Burns, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Sarah D. Hobart, Minnie Stebbins Savage, and Mrs. Ruddy.

Papers of Rasmus Bjorn Anderson, a leading scholar of Scandinavian life and literature. Anderson taught at Albion Academy and the University of Wisconsin, served as minister to Denmark from 1885 to 1889, and was instrumental in bringing to the U.S. on tour or as permanent residents many Scandinavians prominent in the world of music, literature, religion, and science. He wrote, translated, and edited a number of articles, pamphlets, and books; from 1898 to 1922, edited the Norwegian language weekly Amerika; and in 1895 published his First Chapter of Norwegian Immigration, a history of the movement up to 1840, embodying numerous narratives by the immigrants themselves. He also engaged for brief periods in business enterprises, including the sale of life insurance, the American agency for a Norwegian cod liver oil, and the development of a rubber plantation in Mexico. Anderson carried on a voluminous correspondence in Norwegian, English, and other languages, covering all these phases of his career. Also present are translations, articles, and addresses; social memorabilia for his years in the diplomatic service; an account book for a Mexican rubber plantation; diaries kept by Mrs. Anderson, 1876-1889 (with gaps); and other financial records. More than 2,500 correspondents are represented in the collection. Among them are his classmates at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa; faculty members there and at Albion Academy; aspiring writers and translators of Scandinavian literature; notable critics and authors; newspaper and magazine editors; book publishers and dealers; churchmen; committees seeking Anderson's services as a lecturer; guests whom he had entertained; personal friends; pioneer Norwegian settlers giving historical information; diplomats; travelers; and, in general, almost everyone in the United States and many in foreign countries interested in the study of Scandinavian life and literature. Included are literary figures Bjornstjerne Bjornson, Georg Brandes, Knut Hamsun, Jonas Lie, and Viktor Rydberg and Thorstein Veblen. Anderson discusses the defeat of the Democratic Party in the election of 1888, which he attributes to Americans, particularly farmers, not understanding the tariff issue on which the Democrats must continue to educate them. He discusses the translations that will keep him busy after he is removed from his diplomatic post in Copenhagen and thanks Boyesen for a kind review.

The papers consist of correspondence, primarily for the years 1916-1947; manuscripts of articles for the "Wisconsin Farmer"; notes on state and local history; and drafts of original stories, poems, and plays. Many letters and notes contain biographical material on Robert M. La Follette Sr., and on the La Follette family. Barton also collected data on other persons of Wisconsin interest, notably John F. Appleby, Ole Bull, Hans C. Heg, Marcus Thrane, and Ella Wheeler Wilcox. The collection also contains information on the history of early Madison and Dane County, on soldiers of the Revolution and the War of 1812, on Norwegian settlement in the state, and on old cemetery inscriptions. Included in the collection are a few small groups of manuscripts of other persons collected by Barton: scattered business papers, 1862-1873, of B. W. Suckow, early Madison printer and bookbinder; Civil War letters, including a number from Libby Prison, written by Ole C. Johnson of Stoughton, lieutenant colonel of the 15th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry; and correspondence, 1868-1896, of Rasmus B. Anderson. Among Barton's own correspondents were John J. Blaine, Theodore Blegen, August Derleth, Carl Russell Fish, Zona Gale, Hjalmer R. Holand, Philip La Follette, Robert M. La Follette Sr., Milo M. Quaife, and Joseph Schafer. The photographic portion of the processed collection consists of images of Norway collected by Barton. Images include views of scenery, harbors, fishing and whaling, and small villages. Also included are images of Laplanders. Sixteen images are from a series of photographs titled "Norge" made by Axel Lindahl. The photographs were made circa 1890. Correspondents include Rasmus Bjorn Anderson (1846-1936), a professor at the University of Wisconsin who believed the inscriptions were of Norse origin, and Samuel Foster Haven (1806-1881), librarian of the American Antiquarian Society. Also included are several pages of extracts from H. R. Schoolcraft's _Archives of Aboriginal Knowledge_ (1860), an engraving apparently from C. C. Rafn's _The Discovery of America by the Northmen_, two photographs of Dighton Rock, and a drawing of the inscriptions.
