Birth control advocacy organization. The records provide a unique source for the study of the establishment and development of an organization largely run by women. They document the half-century struggle to revoke the Massachusetts Comstock Laws through state initiative and referendum voting (1942, 1948) campaigns for the right to disseminate information on birth control. Also of interest are letters to and from Margaret Sanger, and from General Douglas MacArthur forbidding Sanger from visiting Japan; individual files of Loraine L. Campbell, birth control crusader and President of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America in the 1950s; and files on such topics as maternal and infant health, abortion, African Americans and birth control, population and public policy, eugenics, marriage and sex counseling, connections and conflicts with the Catholic Church, and contraceptive research. Types of materials include organizational records, conference proceedings, financial records, publicity, photographs, scrapbooks, a large amount of correspondence, and reports.

Rock, John Charles, 1890-1984. Personal and Professional Papers, 1918-1983.

Title: Personal and Professional Papers, 1918-1983.

Consists of Rock's research records from his tenure as director of the Fertility and Endocrine Clinic at the Free Hospital for Women in Brookline, Mass., including research notebooks, correspondence, data, memoranda, research files, lantern slides, and patient records, including note cards, laboratory microscope slides, and photographs produced from his clinical activities. The collection also includes Rock's collaborative writings, reproductive health research notes, and correspondence with individuals involved in birth control research, including Katharine McCormick, and colleagues Gregory Pincus, Min-Chueh Chang, Celso-Ramon Garcia, Edris Rice-Wray regarding their work on the development of the birth control pill. Additional writings, lecture notes, film reels, and audio recordings produced from his reproductive health research address such topics as the development of the birth control pill, in vitro fertilization, sperm freezing for preservation, corpus luteum, and human embryo development. The collection also contains lantern slides, notes, and laboratory data resulting from Rock's collaboration with Arthur Hertig on in vitro fertilization and human embryo development research funded by the Carnegie Institute of Washington. Writings, notes, lantern slides, laboratory data and notebooks record Rock and labortory assistant Miriam Menkin's research on in-vitro fertilization, the development of oral contraceptives, and other aspects of human reproduction. Included are photographs of in vitro fertilization and charts of data on embryos. Also contains Rock's lecture notes from his classes taught at Harvard Medical School, Rock's personal correspondence, and photographs of Rock. The collection also includes a small amount of Miriam Menkin's personal correspondence, scrapbooks, and publication files.

Title: William E. Castle Papers Bulk, 1950-1961 1930-1961

A modest Midwesterner who became one of the most influential geneticists of the first half of the 20th century, William E. Castle spent his career at Harvard and the University of California working on patterns of inheritance in mice, horses, and a variety of other mammalian taxa. An early proponent of Mendelian theory, Castle was director of the Bussey Institution at Harvard for almost thirty years, helping to train a number of important geneticists. The Castle Papers contain one linear foot of correspondence dating primarily from the period after Castle's "retirement" to Berkeley in 1936 until his death in 1962, dealing almost exclusively with his research on horse breeding and the inheritance of coat coloration in horses. Castle's correspondence with his former student L. C. Dunn is an exception, focusing on mouse genetics and ranging to a variety of topics from the conduct of scientific research during the Second World War to Castle's interests in the early history of genetics.

Birth control advocate and nurse. Sanger, a sex reform activist, fought for women's rights to use contraceptives and founded both the national and international Planned Parenthood Federations. Papers include correspondence, writings, organizational and conference materials documenting her leadership of the American and international birth control movements. Also included are records of activities and events related to Sanger's personal life, tributes, travels, art work, family materials, audio and video recordings, and dozens of photographs. (NOTE: The papers are divided into two distinct portions: those microfilmed by the Margaret Sanger Papers Project, consisting of 39.5 linear feet; and the unfilmed portion consisting of 73.5 linear feet.
