When the Regius Professorship of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, fell vacant in 1859, Joseph Lister was selected from 7 candidates. In August 1861, he was appointed surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and put in charge of its new surgical building. Due to the high level of death from sepsis (known as hospital disease ) in his amputation patients, Lister began to experiment using carbolic acid during surgical procedures. This lessened the death rate from amputation dramatically and marked the development of aseptic surgery. Dr James Finlayson was a student of Joseph Lister. Born in 1840 in Glasgow, James entered the University of Glasgow in 1856 as an arts student. From 1862-1867 he attended classes at Anderson College of Medicine, Glasgow, receiving the degree of MB with honours from the University in 1867 and then his MD in 1869 . In 1899, he received the honorary degree of LLD from the University. In 1867 he became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland and in 1871 was admitted as a Fellow of the Faculty of Physicians & Surgeons of Glasgow where for a quarter of a century he held the post of Honorary Librarian and was able to indulge his interest in early medical literature. In 1899, he became a Visitor of the Faculty, the equivalent of a vice-president, and from 1900-1903 was the Faculty's president. For most of his career, Finlayson worked in hospitals and from 1871 in clinical teaching. From 1871 until 1874 he acted as assistant to Sir William Tennant Gairdner in his clinic at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and from 1875 he was a physician to the Glasgow Western Infirmary, where, as a recognised lecturer on the subject, he taught clinical medicine until his death. He also held the office of Physician to the Glasgow Royal Hospital for Sick Children from 1883-1898 where he also undertook some clinical teaching. Finlayson also wrote prolifically on the subjects of clinical medicine, physiology and anatomy, and medical history and bibliography. His major work was Clinical Manual for the Study of Medical Cases (1878). He died suddenly in 1906 .

Walter B. Cannon Papers, 1905-1928
Title:
Walter B. Cannon Papers 1905-1928
A key spokesman for the medical establishment against the antivivisection movement, Walter B. Cannon was head of the Council for the Defence of Medical Research of the American Medical Association from 1908 to 1936. He and his colleague William W. Keen monitored antivivisectionist activity, mobilized the medical profession, lobbied politicians, testified in public hearings, and wrote tirelessly in defense of animal experimentation. Cannon was George Higginson Professor of Physiology at Harvard Medical School and head of its physiology department. Keen was a prominent surgeon and neurologist from Philadelphia. The Cannon Papers consist of over 1.5 linear feet of correspondence, 1905-1928, primarily between Cannon (1871-1945) and Keen (1837-1932) regarding their mutual opposition to the antivivisection movement.

Peale-Sellers family collection, 1686-1963
Title:
Peale-Sellers Family Collection, 1686-1963
The collection, divided into seven series, represents the careers and interests of the members of the Peale-Sellers family from the 1670s to 1960s. More than half is correspondence among various members of the families. The Peale family is best known as a family of artists; however, family interests and activities were much more wide-ranging. The best known Peale is Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827, APS 1786), who produced more than one thousand paintings, including hundreds of portraits of leading Americans during the colonial and early national periods. Peale was married three times, to Rachel Brewster (1744-1790), Elizabeth de Peyster (1765-1804), and Hannah More (1755-1821). He had eighteen children, eleven of whom reached adulthood. Three of Charles Willson Peale’s sons became artists: Raphaelle Peale (1774-1825), Rembrandt Peale (1778-1860), and Rubens Peale (1784-1865). A fourth son, Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885, APS 1833), was a naturalist (who made drawings on the exploring expeditions he accompanied) and pioneer in photography, and another son, Benjamin Franklin Peale (1795-1870), became a naturalist and paleontologist. Peale’s daughter Sophonisba Angusciola was married to Coleman Sellers (1781-1834), an inventor and manufacturer of machinery, including locomotives. Two of their sons, George Escol Sellers (1808-1899) and Coleman Sellers (1827-1907, APS 1872), were inventors and engineers. The latter served as director of the construction of the hydro-electric power development at Niagara Falls. He was married to Cornelia Wells Sellers (1831-1909). One of their grandsons was Charles Coleman Sellers (1903-1980, APS 1979), a librarian and historian and the author of several studies of the Peale family, including a Charles Willson Peale biography.

2 ALS and a fragment of an ALS. Lister writes to James Burn Russell, inquiring about the use and success of anti-plague sera against the plague in Glasgow, and to Herbert Edward Durham, on the question whether the mosquito is the carrier of the yellow fever agent, suggesting various experimental ways to discover the bacilli and establish their development within the organism of the mosquito.

Newmark, Leo, 1861-1943. Leo Newmark diaries and family materials, c.1850-1938.
Title:
Leo Newmark diaries and family materials, c.1850-1938.
Collection of diaries, scrapbooks, and family histories kept by Leo Newmark and Harris Newmark between the 1880s and 1938, as well as an unidentified German diary kept in 1850. Individual items include the manuscript of Leo Newmark's California family Newmark: an intimate history (c.1970), which traces Newmark's father J.P. Newmark and other family members from their origins in Prussia to their arrival in Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as being an autobiographical history of Newmark's youth. There are also four diaries kept by Leo Newmark, including his 1900 account of his travels in Europe (including Gibraltar, Naples, Rome, Venice, Zurich, Strasburg, Berlin, Copenhagen, and London) and a 1912-1931 diary which includes references to Newmark's travels from London to New York aboard the Laconia, his impressions of World War I and the Russian Revolution (includes the remarks "I didn't see any reason to object to the sinking of the Lusitania," "War was declared about a week ago but except for the newspapers there is no visible sign of warlike proceedings," and "Russia's revolution gives the Allies and Americans a fine opportunity to orate about 'making the world safe for Democracy' . . . [but] for us Jews there are many pros and cons"), and to the Graf Zeppelin's arrival in San Francisco in August 1929. Newmark's diaries include frequent references to his scholarly activities and are written in English, German, French, Ethiopic, and Arabic. Also included is Newmark's book of "Random Recollections" (1927), which recalls his meetings with Ambrose Bierce, Louis Pasteur, Jacques Loeb, Walther Rathenau, Franklin K. Lane, and Baron Lister; Newmark's scrapbook, which includes newspaper clippings and obituaries relating to his family members and acquaintances; and Harris Newmark's 1883-1908 scrapbook, which includes clippings, notes, letters, photographs, and ephemera relating to the Newmark and Loeb families.
ArchivalResource: 9 diaries and scrapbooks.
