Papers of Thomas Dwight, 1869-1873 (inclusive).

Contains mainly letters from Thomas Dwight to his mother Mary Collins Dwight written while studying medicine in Vienna and Munich and while teaching at Bowdoin College. Also contains letters to his younger sister Mary while teaching at Bowdoin, a letter to his father Thomas written from Europe, and a letter to Dwight from Charles W. Eliot offering him an appointment to teach anatomy at Harvard. Letters primarily concern family affairs, social contacts, and practical matters. Dwight also describes laboratory experiences and research with Salomon Stricker in Vienna and Nicolaus Rüdinger in Munich; his visits to medical schools and hospitals in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, and Queenstown, and observation of Lister demonstrating aseptic surgical techniques; also includes accounts of lectures and clinical experience at Bowdoin.
