Subject matter of these records include work areas of LCUSA and NLC, campus ministry, social welfare concerns, racism in the church, Lutheran-Catholic relations, Lutheran-Orthodox relations, Native American ministry, rural church issues, refugees, service to military personnel, the Lutheran church in Canada, liturgy and church music, the Lutheran Bible Institute, youth ministry, and relief work. NLC and LCUSA included TALC in their membership and as the president of a member body, Pastor Schiotz served on their executive committees. Included in these records are records of Pastor Schiotz's predecessor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church (ELC), the Rev. J.A. Aasgaard. There is some correspondence that was generated by Schiotz in his pre-TALC tenure when he served as executive secretary of the NLC's Division of Lutheran World Federation Affairs' Commission on Younger Churches and Orphaned Missions (CYCOM), as well as from his service on the executive committees of CYCOM and the NLC's Department of World Mission Cooperation during his tenure as ELC president. In addition to a majority of the correspondence authored by Schiotz, this series also includes a sizable quantity of correspondence written by the Rev. J.A. Aasgaard, president of the ELC prior to Schiotz; C. Thomas Spitz, Jr., general secretary of LCUSA, and Paul C. Empie, executive director of the NLC.
