Consultation on Church Union Files, 1968-1972.

Consultation on Church Union (COCU) files (1968-1972) contain guidelines for local church clusters; news releases issued by the COCU, Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA), and other organizations; Lutheran observer-consultant reports; a 1970 Meeting notebook; and a copy of "A Plan of Union" (1970). The Lutheran delegation attending the 1968 COCU Meeting in Dayton, Ohio, included LCUSA General Secretary C. Thomas Spitz; Division of Theological Studies Executive Secretary Arnold E. Carlson; and Division of Public Relations Executive Secretary John H. Tietjen. Participants at the 1969 Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia included LCUSA Division of Theological Studies Assistant Executive Secretary Paul D. Opsahl and Division of Public Relations Executive Secretary John H. Tietjen. Department of Campus Ministry Secretary Reuben Baerwald; Executive Secretary of the Division of Mission Service Reuben A. Lundeen; and Division of Theological Studies Executive Secretary Fred W. Meuser attended the 1970 Meeting in St. Louis, Missouri.

The Lutheran Council in the USA (LCUSA) was founded in 1967 as an inter-Lutheran agency of The American Lutheran Church (TALC), the Lutheran Church in America (LCA), the Synod of Evangelical Lutheran Churches (SELC) (which became an LCMS non-geographic district in 1970), and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS).
