The portion of the Emmet Collection housed in the Manuscripts and Archives Division consists of approximately 10,800 historical manuscripts relating chiefly to the period prior to, during, and following the American Revolution. The collection contains letters and documents by the signers of the Declaration of Independence as well as nearly every prominent historical figure of the period.

Title: Jared Sparks collection of American manuscripts, 1582-1843.

The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others. The Sparks collection also contains his own historical essays and compositions, published articles, letter books, diaries, account books related to his college days, professional research, and material documenting his tenure as College president.

The Palfrey family papers document the varied activities of four generations of a New England family over the course of 150 years. The bulk of the collection consists of the papers of John Gorham Palfrey, including correspondence, diaries, manuscripts and page proofs of his History of New England as well as manuscripts of shorter writings, sermons, lectures, account books, school books, and legal and financial papers. The papers of William Palfrey include detailed records of shipping transactions in England, Virginia, and Boston, and a large number of invoices showing the distribution of government funds to the army during the Revolution. John Palfrey's papers include correspondence and a journal, 1807-1814, detailing work done on his Louisiana plantation. Papers of John Carver Palfrey and Sarah Hammond Palfrey include correspondence, articles, poems, and other writings. Throughout the collection there are long runs of family letters, particularly between John Gorham Palfrey, his wife, and their children.

Papers of the Palfrey family of New England. The material of this collection encompasses over 150 years of American history and many items of interest besides those documenting the life and works of John Gorham Palfrey, who is its central figure. A few of these may be briefly mentioned here. The papers of William Palfrey include letters between John Wilkes and the Sons of Liberty and William Palfrey's personal correspondence with Wilkes at the time of the latter's imprisonment in 1769-1770, including Palfrey's description of the Boston Massacre. William Palfrey's business account and financial papers are extensive and range in subject from accounts of trade with Virginia in 1763 to the disposition of funds of the Continental Army during the time Palfrey was Pay Master General. His close association and correspondence with John Hancock should be noted. Several interesting items pertain to the dispute between Hancock and the Boston printer, John Mein, which resulted in Thomas Longman's suit against Mein and the latter's imprisonment. The papers of John Palfrey deal mainly with his business affairs and the management of his plantation at Attakapas. However, several letters by his sons, Edward, William Taylor, and Henry William give first-hand accounts of battles in the war of 1812. Letters to John Gorham Palfrey from over 1000 corespondents form the largest single section in the collection. Of special importance are 377 letters from Jared Sparks and 148 letters from Charles Sumner.

Greene, Nathanael, 1742-1786. Papers, 1777-1780

Title: Nathanael Greene Papers 1777-1780

Nathanael Greene was one of the leading commanders in the Continental Army, and the only officer George Washington saw as capable of leading in his absence. Greene served as a field commander, member of Washington's staff, Quartermaster General, and commander of the Army in the Southern Theater. Greene was born on July 27, 1742 in Potowomut, Rhode Island to a Quaker family, who believed that their children would learn more from manual labor then from attending school. Lacking a formal education Greene was very intelligent and taught himself to read, developing early on a love of books - particularly military history and theory. It was through reading, not experience, where Greene learned his knowledge of military science. Between 1778 and 1780 he reluctantly served as Quartermaster General, and was able to drastically improve supplying the Continental Army. Greene ended his military career leading the American Southern army to victory over the British. Greene died in Georgia in June 1786. The Papers of Nathanael Greene come from Greene's tenure as Quartermaster General of the Continental Army between 1778 and 1780. The collection primarily consists of Greene's correspondence with officers in the quartermaster department, officers in the Army (including George Washington), and members of the Continental Congress; relating to the operation of the Quartermaster Department with requests for supplies, forage, and money. In addition, there is also correspondence between officers of the Quartermaster Department. The content of the letters provide a detailed account of the logistical obstacles that Greene and his subordinates faced in trying to keep not only the Quartermaster Department but the Continental Army running. The papers do not contain any material relating to Greene's military service or private life either before or after his tenure as quartermaster general.

Correspondence from Thomas Maskell, Judge Joshua Baker, and William T. Palfrey of Franklin, St. Mary Parish, La., concerning the settlement of the estate of Plaisted's brother, a lawyer in St. Mary Parish. Maskell, who apparently purchased the slaves belonging to Plaisted's brother, promises to govern them by threatening to sell them rather than by whipping them for sullenness or lack of cooperation. Baker requests Plaisted hire for him a lumber foreman, a teamster, and men who understand rafting.

Lee writes a light-hearted letter, speaking of food and friends, just before the British attack on Fort Moultrie. A 39-word, hastily written note by John Hancock on the address leaf concerns "the most fortunate Defeat of the Troops & Ships at So Carolina."

Journal kept by Boston merchant William Palfrey from 13 Feb. - 9 May 1771 while travelling in London. The entries record sightseeing, dinners, visits, concerts and plays attended, sightings of royalty, his travels outside London, business dealings trying to procure commissions, and his return voyage to America. The vol. also contains his personal expenses for the trip.
