The Kennicott-Bannister Papers constitute a small but valuable collection, especially for the historian of American science. The bulk of the collection consists of the letters and diaries of the two explorers between 1857 and 1873. The papers of Henry Bannister are more complete than those of his mentor. Photographs and correspondence concerning the history of the collection are also included.

Title: Robert Kennicott-Henry M. Bannister Papers, 1857-1873.

The bulk of the collection consists of the letters and diaries of the two explorers between 1857 and 1873. The Kennicott correspondence is all incoming and concerns the establishment of a natural history museum at Northwestern University and the classification of various flora and fauna. The Kennicott materials also include a copy of his Alaska journal. The papers of Henry Bannister include the five volumes of his diary, recorded between March 21, 1865 and July 5, 1873. The entries after January, 1867 are irregular; however, Bannister's papers include his correspondence between January 1, 1864 and December 21, 1905, with Kennicott and officials at the Smithsonian Institution. Other items of interest are Bannister's memoir of the Alaska expedition and a number of manuscript essays on the expedition, Kennicott, and Russian possessions in North America. Photographs and correspondence concerning the history of the collection are included, as well as certificates and diplomas documenting his medical education.

This manuscript collection is divided into three series: RK, Robert Kennicott Correspondence and Papers, which contains all correspondence to and from Robert Kennicott, a number of lettrrs of recommendation and various papers: his tutorial exercises, memorandum drafts of letters and articles and a series of notebooks. The second series, FP, Kennicott Family Correspondence and Papers, includes all family material not by or to Robert Kennicott. It is the main depository of John A. Kennicott material, containing draft versions of his articles, his verse, a record of his activities on behalf of agricultural and horticultural progress and his voluminous personal correspondence. The third series, BP Kennicott Business Correspondence and Papers, is restricted to material related to the operation of the Grove Nursery, chiefly orders, accounts and the like.

Photocopies of correspondence of Kennicott, Kirtland and Baird. Some letters of John Kennicott to Baird. Kennicott's letters are lengthy, entertaining, exuberant and shine with the joy and curiosity he felt in the natural world. They describe his work, what he has found and learned, with many descriptions of scenes he has observed in the animal world. He asks for guidance and criticism of his work and freely shows his appreciation and admiration for their work and help. The need for a Chicago natural history society and museum is a frequent topic as well as his need for equippment and funds. Letters from Kirtner and Baird are full of guidance, their work and their family news. A printed copy of his journal on his first Canadian expedition. There is also correspondence of William Stimpson with Baird and Professor Henry from the Smithsonian.

Title: Orderly book of the bark Golden Gate and clipper ship Nightingale, 1865-1866.

The volume contains the orders of Engineer-in-Chief Charles S. Bulkley, and Chief of Marine Charles M. Scammon from May 1865 to December 1866. The orders deal with the following issues: destinations for the ships including San Francisco, California, Victoria, B.C., Sitka, Alaska, the Bering Strait, Siberia and Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiǐ, Russia; directions to certain ports; the rules and regulations of the expedition; the promotions, transfers, and punishments of sailors; work to be done by the land parties; ship repairs; the selling and buying of furs; and interactions with the native Alaskans. The volume also mentions the body of Robert Kennicott being brought aboard; Kennicott was the Chief of the Scientific Corps of the expedition and died in Alaska in May 1866.

This collection contains mostly entomological material, with much information on the description and identification of particular insects, entomological collections, and the study of entomology in Europe and the United States. In addition, there are materials on medicine and hospitals during the American Civil War, on the Corps of Topographical Engineers, the United States Army, on natural history in the United States, and on the LeConte's family. Some letters are written to President Rutherford B. Hayes and concern the Commissionership of Agriculture, for which LeConte was considered, but not appointed. Letters of John Eatton LeConte and Joseph LeConte are included.

The collection consists of one typed transcript, two photocopies, and one negative microfilm copy of three diaries which belonged to Joseph T. Dyer dated Aug. 22, 1865 to Oct. 8, 1867. The diaries were written aboard ship from Sitka to Fort St. Michael and elsewhere in Alaska during the time of Russian governance during the Western Union Telegraph Expedition. Subjects of the diaries include the Western Union Telegraph Expedition (1865-1867), an account of the death of Major Robert Kennicott, and daily activities on board ship and during trips to the Alaska mainland during the expedition.
