Papers of a prominent Wisconsin lawyer. The microfilmed portion of the collection is divided into two parts. Files, 1933-1946, cover the years of Dempsey's service on the State Board of Normal School Regents; including correspondence with other regents, state college presidents, and state governors, regarding teachers' salaries during the depression, teacher shortages due to World War II, the influx of war veterans after 1945, hiring and firing of teachers, budgets, and red baiting of teachers. Also includes minutes of the regents, clippings, and research material kept by Dempsey on a variety of topics.

Harvey Pitkin Papers, 1884-1968

Title: Harvey Pitkin Papers 1884-1968

The linguist Harvey Pitkin has worked on several of the indigenous languages of Northern California, with a particular interest in Wintu, Patwin, and Yuki. A student of A. L. Kroeber, Pitkin was a member of the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Berkeley, and later at Columbia University before his retirement in the late 1980s. The Pitkin Papers contain materials recorded or accumuluted by Harvey Pitkin during the course of his study of American Indian languages, including not only his own fieldnotes and research on Wintu and Yuki, but originals and copies of notes, notebooks, and slipfiles by A. L. Kroeber, A. M. Halpern, John P. Harrington, John Alden Mason, Paul Radin, Hans Uldall, Donald Ultan, T. T. Waterman, and others. These include important information on Atsugewi, Kwakiutl, Luiseno, Pomo, Wappo, Yahi, and Yana, and include some data on the consultants Ralph Moore (Yuki) and Ishi (Yahi).

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Material covers period primarily from 1872 to 1906. 1) Manuscripts, working and completed Indian work; drafts and edited versions of MEMOIRS includes reference to dispute with United States Ambassador to Russia, Cassius Clay, and correspondence to noted figures including President Theodore Roosevelt, Polish author Henryk Sienkiewicz, and Russian artist Vassily Vereschegen. 2) Photographs taken by Alma Curtin of family, friends, travels, and personages. 3) Personal diaries, correspondence, and scrapbooks of Alma Curtin. Diaries chronicle the life of the Curtins. Begun by Alma Cardell in 1861, they date to 1936.
