Title: The Denis Joseph O'Connell papers. 1818-1924.

Dating from the time of O'Connell's rectorship of the North American College in Rome, the correspondence consists of two files covering 1886-1894 and 7 reels of microfilm from the Richmond Diocesan Archives covering 1888-1903. There is also 5 additional reels of other Richmond diocesan material that comes to 5 reels of microfilm covering 1818-1924. The Roman correspondence not only concerns college matters but also clearly reflects O'Connell's activities as unofficial agent for the U.S. Church in Rome, a role frequently played by rectors of the college. Correspondents include Bishop Bernard J. McQuaid of Rochester, Bishop John Moore of St. Augustine, Archbishop Patrick J. Ryan of Philadelphia, Archbishop William H. Elder of Cincinnati, Bishop John S. Foley of Detroit, and Bishop Edward Fitzgerald of Little Rock, who address matters regarding students enrolled by them at the college, or solicit the rector's aid in dealing with Roman authorities. A number of letters from Charles E. McDonell, secretary to John Cardinal McClosky of New York (and later Bishop of Brooklyn, 1892-1924), also discuss Henry George's mayoral campaign in New York, 1886, Edward McGlynn's activities on George's behalf, and the visit of Paolo Mori to the U.S. on a secret mission from the Pope. Also present are letters from Sebastian G. Messmer, Richard L. Burtsell, Thomas J. Shahan, Thomas O'Gorman, and John A. Zahn.

Ryan, and John J. Kain). Scattered issues of the journal Kamloop Wawa (1894-1897); five issues (1896-1898) of Anishinabe Enamiad, a Monthly Journal Devoted to the Interests of the Franciscan Missions Among the Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, published in Harbor Springs, Michigan; and a xerox copy of a Potawatomi catechism (1838). With information on Catholic missions in northern Indiana and southwestern lower Michigan, the location of Fort St. Joseph and Fort St. Joseph Mission, Potawatomie chief Simon Pokagon and his family, and Indian languages.

Correspondents include bishops Joseph S. Alemany, James Roosevelt Bayley, Francis Norbert Blanchet, Michael A. Corrigan, William Henry Elder, Ignatius Horstmann, John McCloskey, William McCloskey, John Baptist Purcell, Patrick John Ryan, Robert Seton, and others; and the founder of the Paulists, Isaac Thomas Hecker.

Carrington Family papers, 1749-1929

Title: Carrington Family papers 1749-1929

The papers consist of correspondence, pamphlets, printed material, scrapbooks, sermons, and other papers relating to members of the Carrington family. Henry Beebee Carrington (1824-1912) and his grandfather, David Lewis Beebe (1763-1803), are two central figures in the papers. Material relating to David Lewis Beebe, including essays and sermons, documents his religious duties in Connecticut and family concerns in Ohio. Henry Beebee Carrington material includes correspondence, a diary, a letterbook, maps, pamphlets, scrapbooks, and other items documenting his experiences as a student at Yale University, as a lawyer practicing in Ohio, and as a commanding officer for Union forces during the Civil War. Carrington's role in military campaigns and treaty negotiations with Indians of the American West is also documented. His design of Fort Philip Kearney, the site of a famous massacre, and treaty negotiations with the Flathead Indians of Montana are detailed in pamphlets, scrapbooks and other papers.

The Martin J. Griffin papers consist of correspondence received by Martin I. J. Griffin and both manuscript and printed materials relating to the history of Roman Catholicism in the United States. Also included are a few photographs and a collection of Griffin's school papers. Although much of the correspondence concerns business matters of the various publications edited by Griffin or deals with Catholic historical topics, there is abundant material pertaining to the contemporary temperance movement within the Catholic Church, particularly the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America. The correspondence includes letters from many 19th century Catholic priests and bishops, providing insight into how those temperance movements were viewed by the hierarchy of the church.

The papers consist chiefly of letters to Childs in thanks for copies of "Recollections" and "The Stratford upon Avon memorial fountain to Shakespeare." There are very brief mentions of the Philadelphia "Public Ledger," the "Commercial Bulletin," and "Lippincott's magazine," hopes for fairer treatment of American Indians, U.S. Grant's travels in Grenada and Peking, memorial church windows in London, the common bond between England and the U. S., and portraits of Union generals at West Point. In addition there are letters, 1851-1881, bound in an extra-illustrated copy of "Recollections" which are to or from people mentioned in the book. These include letters from G.P.R. James on the consulate at Norfolk, Va., Hablot Knight Brown on graphotypes, Lytton Bulwer on a charitable request, William Howitt requesting Irish sketches from Carlton, and a patronage request from Simon Cameron to President Grant. Also Charles Dickens on funeral arrangements for a Mr. Fleming, Samuel Randall and William T. Sherman conveying personal news, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry W. Longfellow and Fitz-Greene Halleck sending regrets, Matthew Arnold sending thanks, and George Bancroft sending checks.
