Francis Patrick Kenrick was born in Dublin, Ireland on December 3, 1796. He was the eldest son of Thomas Kenrick and Jane Eustace Kenrick. His theological studies were made in Rome at the Urban College of Propaganda where he was ordained on April 7, 1821. He later arrived in America, appointed to the faculties of both St. Thomas Seminary and St. Joseph's College in Bardstown, Kentucky. The diocese of Philadelphia was created in 1808 with Michael Egan, OFM, pastor of St. Mary's Church, as the first bishop.
