The Martin J. Griffin papers consist of correspondence received by Martin I. J. Griffin and both manuscript and printed materials relating to the history of Roman Catholicism in the United States. Also included are a few photographs and a collection of Griffin's school papers. Although much of the correspondence concerns business matters of the various publications edited by Griffin or deals with Catholic historical topics, there is abundant material pertaining to the contemporary temperance movement within the Catholic Church, particularly the Catholic Total Abstinence Union of America. The correspondence includes letters from many 19th century Catholic priests and bishops, providing insight into how those temperance movements were viewed by the hierarchy of the church.
