Administrative files of the White Mountain Research Station, a University of California Multicampus Research Unit (MRU) supporting high altitude research. The station operated under the direction of Nello Pace (1950-1977) and William J. Welch (1977-1979) of UCB, Clarence A. Hall, Jr., of UCLA and Frank Powell (1995-present) of UCSD. The files largely relate to facilities administration and development, funding through contracts and grants, maintenance, events, and symposia. The collection includes administrative correspondence, annual reports, minutes (1951-1996) of the Advisory Committee for the White Mountain Research Station, contracts and proposals, facility development files, symposia files, teaching materials, publicity films, and numerous photographic materials documenting facilities, the environment, personnel, and some of the experiments carried out at the site. Also included are two films, an early promotional and informational work entitled WHITE MOUNTAIN RESEARCH STATION (ca. 1960) and SCIENTIFIC DIVERSITY: WHITE MOUNTAIN RESEARCH STATION (1988).

Cronquist, 1958-1969; membership lists; subscription records; reports; and financial records of the ASPT, 1938-1983. Also included are correspondence, a report and map concerning the need for a bill to protect the area near the Mt. St. Helens volcanic eruption for biological research, 1982; and questionnaires: "A Survey of Resources in Systematic Botany in the U.S." ca.1960's-1970's, completed, returned to Patricia Holmgren at the New York Botanical Garden, and containing information about collections and personnel in herbaria. Questionnaires were produced and circulated by the Advisory Committee for Systematic Resources in Botany of the ASPT. Correspondents prominently represented include David M. Bates, C. Ritchie Bell, Wendell Holmes Camp, Lincoln Constance, Arthur J. Cronquist, Norman C. Fassett, Charles B. Correspondence, contracts and proposals, publications, committee minutes and reports, and photographs documenting the history and research activity of one of the first high altitude research stations in the U.S. Materials transferred from UCB Archives to UCSD Archives in May 1998 are administrative records created during the directorships of Nello Pace and William J. Welch, both UCB faculty. Materials transferred from WMRS Director's office in May 1998 are administrative records largely created during the directorships of Clarence Hall (UCLA) and Frank Powell (UCSD). Arthur C. Smith, a naturalist associated with UC Davis and David B. Dill, founder of the Harvard Fatigue Laboratory, are prominent in the files. The collection also contains two films made about the White Mountain Research Station, one in 1960 and the second in 1991.
