This collection consists of letter books of outgoing correspondence from Lester & Ravenel, Lester, Ravenel & Kenan, and T.P. Ravenel, 1871-1927. Also included are folders of incoming correspondence, 1888-1905, brief books, financial accounts, and clippings. Some of the incoming correspondence concerning individual cases is arranged alphabetically by subject. There are 15 volumes of abstracts of title to property in Savannah and Chatham County, with a folder of indices to the abstracts. Included are 2 volumes of T.P. Ravenel's personal accounts and 2 volumes of receipts. Old deeds and other documents account for the beginning date of this collection as 1769; those after 1827 were added by Ravenel's son-in-law, Thomas H. Gignilliat, who continued the firm under his own name.

Title: Josiah Gorgas papers, 1857-1878.

Diaries, 1857-1864 and 1864-1878, of Josiah Gorgas, describing his life as a U.S. army ordnance officer stationed at Augusta, Me., Charleston, S.C., and Frankford Arsenal, Pa.; as Confederate Chief of Ordnance in Richmond, Va.; and after the war as a private citizen. Describes home and family life, weather and antebellum social life in New England, the growing sectional political tensions, and, after joining the Confederate cause, economic, political, and social conditions in Richmond, Va., where he spent most of the war years. After the war Gorgas managed the Brierfield Iron Works in Alabama and then was professor of engineering and president of the University of the South at Sewanee, Tenn., 1867-1877. Also, letter, 1863, from Col. Hugh K. Aiken, C.S.A., concerning the sale of the Charleston and Savannah Railroad and the exchange of Confederate prisoners of war.

Checkbooks for John Colcock & Company and Legare, Colcock and Company contain stubs and blank checks for the Bank of the State of South Carolina. The first volume (34/472, 1852, 1863-1864) may be continued from an earlier one since it begins with the statement "Bal from Ck book No. 1." Check stubs (1852) in the beginning of the volume appear to be for John Colcock & Company. Additional stubs (1863-1864) begin after several blank pages. The time period covered by checks in the second volume (34/473, 1862-1866) overlaps that covered by the first. Legare, Colcock & Company is written on several stubs. Amounts received are for rice, cotton, commissions, on account, and so forth. Checks are written for cotton, drayage for cotton, personal expenses, expenses of the children, tuition, loans, a housekeeper, bricks, sundries, merchandise, and numerous other purposes. A number of checks are written to individuals without indicating the reason for payment. Clients include R.H. Bacot, J.S. Bird & Co., the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, Charles and William Colcock, James Cuthbert, John Douglas, Mrs. E.A. Gillison, Thomas H. Gregorie, Thomas Grimball, Thomas M. Five small pocket diaries cover the period of January 1862 to November 1866. The 1864 diary continues with entries concerning Crossman's law officer duties; picket duty at Pigeon Point and other locations at Beaufort, S.C.; an expedition to Johns Island, S.C., and fighting near Legareville in July; visits home to New York State; and Crossman rejoining his regiment in early December, just before a bloody engagement at DeVeaux Neck, near Coosawhatchie, S.C. Crossman's 1865 diary opens at DeVeaux Neck, where his regiment is holdinga position near a stretch of the Charleston & Savannah railroad and being shelled by a Confederate battery. Further entries concern a march from Fort Coosawatchie to Charleston, S.C.; a period of respite in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; entrenchment guard duty at Rekersville, S.C.; the raising of the Union flag at Fort Sumter on 14 April; a march to Newberry, S.C.; Crossman's dealings with freedmen and their former owners in Greenville, Union, and Spartanburg districts in South Carolina; mustering out at Charleston; and Crossman's return to New York. One diary entry notes the graves of African American Union soldiers at Honey Hill, S.C. Crossman's diary for 1866 mainly concerns his employment as an engineer at oil wells in Titusville, Pa.

Letter books of a Camden, South Carolina railroad construction engineer and plantation owner. Correspondence, 1845-1854, is with railroad officials and employees concerning railroad problems, and consists of copies of letters written while in charge of construction for the Camden branch of the South Carolina Railroad, 1845-1850, and for the North Carolina Railroad, 1850-1854; and while in charge of survey for the Charleston and Savannah Railroad, 1854. Correspondence, 1855-1890, is largely personal although up to 1870 there are some letters to the plantation manager and to merchants in Charleston. The correspondence contains information on prices, slavery, economic conditions, secession, the viewpoint of a southern planter before, during, and after the war, labor problems, the effect of the war on a southern family and a plantation, and adjustments after the war.

Business and family letters, account books, and papers relating to lands near Combahee River in Colleton County, S.C., and involving the Heyward, Capers, Chiffelle, Coachman, Gibbes, and Palmer families; includes undated map showing boundaries of plantations, towns, streams in Colleton County, and route of Charleston and Savannah Railroad; topics include cultivation of rice and cotton; African American slaves; politics; Charleston, Colleton County, and elsewhere in S.C.; life during Colonial, Early National, Antebellum, Reconstruction, and later eras. Edward "Barney" Barnwell Heyward, born in Beaufort, S.C., on 4 May 1826, was the son of Charles Heyward (1802-1866) and Emma Barnwell Heyward (1806-1835). Heyward spent much of his youth at Rose Hill plantation near Bluffton, S.C., where he was born and in his family's home in Charleston, S.C. His graduation from South Carolina College in 1845 was followed by an extended trip to Europe. In 1850 Heyward married Lucy Green Izard, of Columbia, S.C. Only one of their four children, Walter Izard (b. 1851), survived infancy. Before his wife's death in 1858, Heyward purchased Goodwill plantation on the Wateree River in lower Richland District, S.C. Civil War letters include family letters of Catherine "Tat" Maria Clinch (1828-1870) who became E.B. Heyward's second wife in 1863. Like the Heywards, family issues beset the Clinch family at the outset of the Civil War. Tat's sister Elizabeth was married to Maj. Robert Anderson, who surrendered Ft. Sumter in April 1861. In July 1861 Tat Clinch informed her mother of the death of Edmund Clinch (22 July 1861); other letters of 1863 discuss her impressions of life in lower Richland County, S.C., as well as news of the Vicksburg campaign and in S.C., the situation along the Combahee River where "The Yankees have devastated the plantations, six or seven of them ... carrying off six or seven hundred negroes" (5 June 1863) [a reference to the raid on Combahee River plantations during the night of June 1st and 2nd by Harriet Tubman and ca. 150 black troops led by Col. James Montgomery]; Sherman's arrival in Savannah, evacuation of slaves and supplies; skepticism about military's ability to stop Sherman's advance; and high incidence of runaway slaves while working as diggers; and. Reconstruction-era letters discuss agriculture and adjustment to free labor; speech, 18 Aug. 1892, of Duncan Clinch Heyward, Black Creek, Colleton County, supporting gubernatorial candidacy of John Sheppard. Letter, 5 Jan. 1918, Ducan Clinch Heyward to Mendel L. Smith, re taxation to support American war efforts in Europe; 3 undated essays presented to Kosmos Club by D.C. Heyward: My Campaign for Governor; Gullah Negroes; A Lynching I Once Attended; and address welcoming Confederate veterans; and congratulatory letters, ca. 1937, to Duncan Clinch Heyward upon publication of his book, Seed from Madagascar. Bound volumes include account book, 1819-1820, of Duncan L. Clinch, containing general expenditures, property value estimates, as well as amounts owed him for military services and prize money for captured vessels; 2 volumes, 1835-1855 and 1856-1862, Charles Heyward's journal while in residence at Charleston, noting yellow fever and cholera outbreaks (1836), trips to Montreal (1844) and Europe (1854), Charleston fire of 11 Dec. 1861, and moving to "Wateree," 7 June 1862. Account book, 1847-1861 and 1863, re cloth and blankets issued to slaves at Ashley farm and Marshland plantation and other expenses; volume, 1855-1862, re planting and harvesting at Amsterdam and Lewisburg plantations, with comments on desertion of African-American slaves to Union forces, and making plans to move slaves to Wateree; volume, 1855-1862, re planting, harvesting of rice, and operation of steam rice thrashing mill at Rose Hill plantation; and 2 volumes, 1837-1864, C[harles] H[eyward], account with Margaret Hays, nurse. Volume (34/431, 1866-1871) entitled "Proceedings of the 2nd Lien 1st Mortgage Bondholders of the Charleston and Savannah Railroad Company against the President and Directors of the Company" includes clippings about the 1869 annual meeting of stockholders, a copy of "An Act to Incorporate the Savannah and Charleston R.R. Co., ratified 21st December 1866" and lists of bondholders. J. Reid Boylston was chairman of the proceedings. Volume (34/430, 1867-1868) entitled "Proceedings of the Board of Directors of the Savannah and Charleston Railroad Company" contains minutes, financial statements, proceedings of the first annual meeting, an index to minutes, and other items. Attached to the volume is a printed pamphlet (1868) "Proceedings at the first annual meeting of stockholders of the Savannah and Charleston R.R. Co." Both written and printed proceedings include the names of locomotives and the number and condition of other machinery.

Letter dating to Reconstruction-era re efforts to block sale of land in Charleston, S.C., investment of trust funds in the North Eastern Rail Road Company [later known as Richmond and Danville Railroad Company], and non-payment of debt; and another legal matter. Legal complaint, 28 November 1870: The State of South Carolina, County of Charleston, Court of Common Pleas; Henry Gourdain, Daniel Ravenel, and C.M. Furman Trustees [plaintiffs] vs. Charles Macbeth [defendant]: Answer of Charles Macbeth, Buist & Buist, Defense Attorneys; re investment of "a portion of the Trust funds belonging to the estate of Mrs. (Elizabeth) Duclos in the coupon Bonds of the North Eastern Rail Road Company.... and the judgment recovered" by Charles Macbeth after suing the company for refusal of payment after the bonds "became payable and redeemable." Macbeth sought, in lieu of the judgment sum of $4,025.63, to sell land owned by the Rail Road Company in Charleston, a move which the plaintiffs sought to prevent. Letter, 22 Sept. 1881, sent by George L. Buist, Charleston, S.C., to a fellow lawyer [Edward McCrady?] briefly noting a case involving the Savannah and Charleston Rail Road, and noting plans to be in Columbia, S.C.

Acknowledging the Executive Council's prompt attention to his request for African American slave labor--"the resolutions of the Council will no doubt be sufficient to accomplish all that is desirable," and pointing out the military necessity of establishing a connection between the South Carolina Rail Road and the Charleston and Savannah Railroad. This letter was written from Pocotaligo [Beaufort District, now Jasper County, S.C.] soon after Maj. Gen. John C. Pemberton assumed command, on 4 Mar. 1862, of the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and East Florida, replacing Robert E. Lee in the post. Pemberton served in this capacity until late Sept. 1862.

Title: Records concerning railroad transportation, 1862-1865.

The collection contains letters, telegrams, and other papers pertaining to railroad transport between the Confederate States during the Civil War. The correspondence is mostly between various officers in the C.S.A. Quartermaster's or Adjutant General's offices and officials of the different railroad companies, including Maj. F.W. Sims of the Railroad Bureau and Acting Adjutant General William M. Wadley. Included are many manuscript telegrams containing orders and information about the transport of troops, stores, and supplies; among them are telegrams relating to the movement of Gen. Longstreet's troops to Georgia. There is a also a memo of a proposed agreement between the C.S.A. and the southern railroad companies.
