Title: Papers and photographs, 1887-1926.

Artificial collection of papers and photographs pertaining to the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Veterans Association. The bulk of the collection is photographs of 12th Wisconsin reunions, in Madison, Reedsburg, Mausberg, Killbourn, Wausau, and Delton. Images for Companies E and G are also included. The photographs were produced by the studio of Wisconsin photographer H.H. Bennett, who had served with Company E during the war. He is featured in a 1906 portrait taken at Killbourn. Manuscript materials include a pension register from 1924, and two memoranda from Hosea W. Rood. The memoranda inform veterans of the status of the group. A decorated program for Co E's 1911 reunion for Company E rounds out the collection.

A sketch of the life and services of General Lucius Fairchild who served with the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiments and was a three-term governor for the state of Wisconsin after the war. The sketch, probably written by Hosea Rood, discusses Fairchild's early life, participation in the California gold rush, Civil War participation, amputation of his left arm at the Battle of Gettysburg, and terms as governor of Wisconsin. Also touched upon is service with the American Council in Liverpool (England), return to Wisconsin, and term as Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The collection also includes an autograph card and a letter about the presentation of Civil War battle flags to the state. Photographs included in this collection are individual portraits of brothers Lucius and Cassius Fairchild in civilian clothing, their mother Sally Blair Fairchild, and pictures of Lucius in uniform. A photograph of the officers of the Second Wisconsin taken at Fredericksburg (Virginia) and the regimental mess of the 2nd are also included.

Records and photographs of the GAR Memorial Hall and its custodians, with the bulk of the material dating from 1904-1965. A significant portion of the collection is from the tenure of Hosea W. Rood, the first custodian of the Hall. Custodian records include correspondence with veterans, GAR officials, and the general public; newspaper columns, essays, poems, and speeches on patriotic themes written by the custodians; six diaries of Hosea Rood from the period during which he was Hall custodian; legislative records about the mandate and operation of the Hall; and correspondence and other records documenting the creation of the Camp Randall Memorial Arch in 1912. The collection also includes budget information about the operation of the Hall; lists of artifacts, flags, pictures, and books; and visitor registers, including GAR members only register dating from 1904 to 1914. Scrapbooks that were created by the Hall custodians or donated to the Hall comprise another large portion of the collection. Most of the scrapbooks feature news clippings about GAR events, reunions, and members, as well as the Women's Relief Corps. Other topics covered include Abraham Lincoln, the assassination of President William McKinley, newspaper clippings containing letters from the 12th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the First Wisconsin Cavalry, World War I and World War II, and a book of 'curious things' from the Civil War. The photographs series includes depictions of the Hall and its exhibits, including many views of the Gettysburg diorama exhibit, and also includes an extensive collection of Civil War-era carte de vistes that were removed from one of the scrapbooks.

Scrapbooks and photographs of Jerome Watrous, a Milwaukee, Wis. veteran, who served as a lieutenant colonel of the Sixth Wisconsin Infantry (Iron Brigade) during the Civil War. The bulk of the collection consists of six scrapbooks. Three scrapbooks contain articles written by Watrous reminiscing on his experiences during the Civil War. A fourth similar scrapbook contains articles by both Watrous and Hosea Rood. Other scrapbooks relate to the 1922 national encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic and the 1917 Blue and Gray reunion at Vicksburg (Mississippi) this scrapbook also contains a series of articles entitled "Striking Stories about Wisconsin at Vicksburg." Also included is the text of Watrous's speech at a dedication ceremony for Civil War battle flags where he comments on the Civil War, emotions of soldiers when they see their old flags, and the importance of winning World War I. The collection also contains the transcriptions of two letters received by Watrous recalling the war, two obituaries, burial information, and a story entitled, "The Old Captain." The photographs in the collection show Watrous in his Spanish-American War uniform.

A scrapbook of letters and service sketches received from veterans who served in Companies E and K of the 1st Wisconsin Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. The letters, containing service reminiscences and reflections, along with military service sketches were sent to Hosea Rood in response to his request for such as he helped organize a reunion commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the organization of the two Wisconsin companies. Included is information from James K. Proudfit, DeWitt C. Poole, Nelson R. Doan, Pliny Norcross, William Soden, William A. Wyse, and John H. Nichols. Also included are photographs of Nichols and Poole in uniform.
