Papers and photographs, 1866-1904.

A sketch of the life and services of General Lucius Fairchild who served with the 1st and 2nd Wisconsin Infantry Regiments and was a three-term governor for the state of Wisconsin after the war. The sketch, probably written by Hosea Rood, discusses Fairchild's early life, participation in the California gold rush, Civil War participation, amputation of his left arm at the Battle of Gettysburg, and terms as governor of Wisconsin. Also touched upon is service with the American Council in Liverpool (England), return to Wisconsin, and term as Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. The collection also includes an autograph card and a letter about the presentation of Civil War battle flags to the state. Photographs included in this collection are individual portraits of brothers Lucius and Cassius Fairchild in civilian clothing, their mother Sally Blair Fairchild, and pictures of Lucius in uniform. A photograph of the officers of the Second Wisconsin taken at Fredericksburg (Virginia) and the regimental mess of the 2nd are also included.
