Consists mainly of letters, deeds, and general legal and financial papers relating to Gershom and John Breed of Norwich, Conn., and Thomas Mumford of Groton, Conn. They engaged in shipping, storekeeping, and investment ventures in Norwich, St. Eustatius, and Rio Essequibo, British Guiana. The records of the Susquehannah Company (1753-1803), a group of proprietors who bought land in Wyoming Valley, Pa., deal with those land purchases and consist of letters and legal papers mostly to and from the Breeds of Norwich, Conn.

Whole and partial letter books, journals, a ledger, a summary of letters received, a personal account book, and other papers of, or related to, the firm of John de Neufville & Son (1780-1853). Letter books (1780-1786) contain copies of correspondence mostly addressed to merchants in Boston, Newburyport, other places in New England, Philadelphia, and occasionally to persons in Baltimore, Albany, Virginia, and South Carolina (3 v., 1,500 p. total). Letters pertain to commercial matters, shipments of goods, debts, dangers to shipping, frequent references to the war, actions of the British, friendly relations between the U.S. and the Netherlands, naval activity, political affairs, etc. The summary of letters received, 1780-1782, is in French (183 p.). Journals (Feb. 1780-May 1785) and ledger (Jan. 1780-Jan. 1782) record accounts primarily with American merchants; in Dutch (3 v.). Personal account book of Nancy de Neufville (1806-1820) records amounts paid for items such as fabric, sewing notions, shoes, entertainments, charitable giving, etc. Other papers include claims made for money owed the firm (1807), a contract in Dutch between John and Leonard de Neufville and Jean Rolland (1783), and an accounting of claims made against the U.S. government (1853).

Parsons, Samuel Holden, 1737-1789. Samuel Parsons and Parsons family papers, 1703-1865.

Primarily correspondence and legal papers of Samuel H. Parsons of Lyme, Connecticut, a general during the Revolutionary War, agent for the Ohio Company, and later surveyor general and chief judge of the Northwest Territory, which consisted of land east of the Mississippi, and between the Ohio River and the Great Lakes. Parsons also was involved in forging treaties with the Indians. His correspondence includes letters to his wife and children, as well as letters to William Samuel Johnson, Jeremiah Wadsworth, Thomas Mumford, and General Heath. Many of the letters concern the prosecution of the war, and in several case refer to prisoners and deserters. Incoming letters were from Silas Deane, Benjamin Huntington, General Knox, and Richard Butler. Parson's will and estate records are included in the collection. Samuel H. Parsons married Mehitable Mather. They had children William Walter, Lucia who married Titus Hosmer, Thomas, Enoch, Mehitable, Phebe, Samuel H., and Margaret. Correspondence to and from the children are included in the collection, in particular descriptions of his travels through Pennsylvania and Ohio. Enoch Parsons had children Mary Sullivan, Enoch Thomas, Samuel Holden, and Henry Ethelbert. He was president of the United States Bank in Middletown, Connecticut, and several of his letters concern his activities with the bank. He is also represented by his will. Enoch's son Samuel H. was a lawyer and actively invested in land and the railroad in New York State and Ohio. Of particular interest and not directly related to the family are two letters to Nehemiah Hubbard from Nathanael Greene and two early deeds for Middletown. The collection also includes two copies of documents signed by George Washington, copies of original town meeting records for Hartford, 1635-1754 in the hand of George Wyllys, a deposition by Andrew Bennet, 1781, correspondence of Samuel H. Parsons, 1889-1906, and some printed materials.

Silas Deane (1737-1789) was an American merchant, politician and diplomat who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress. He later repudiated the Revolution and was branded a traitor, though he was exonerated after his death. The collection consists of letters from Deane to various parties, including Sally Webb, Thomas Mumford, Thomas Cushing, and Samuel Blachley Webb. The letters concern both personal matters and issues relating to the Continental Congress and the American revolutionary cause
