Title:
Charles B. Bullard papers, 1821-1823.
Letterbook of Charles B. Bullard, supercargo for the Boston merchant firm Bryant and Sturgis, includes letters written while Bullard was in the Hawaiian Islands, aboard the ship Tartar, in Canton, and in Boston. Letters are addressed to Bryant and Sturgis; William Sturgis; James P. Sturgis and Co.; Harry Price and Co.; Gideon Snow; William French; and Capt. Henry Oxnard. Much of the correspondence deals with the sale of the Bryant and Sturgis brig Cleopatra's Barge on credit to King Kamehameha II of the Hawaiian Islands by Capt. John Stuer for sandalwood, the difficulties in collecting on the debt, and Bullard's concern regarding Suter's handling of this sale and the sale of the brig Becket. Other letters discuss transactions for Bryant & Sturgis, and the sale of cargoes consigned to Bullard and material shipped under his own name for his personal benefit.
