John Kendrick was the original commander of the 1787 expedition of the Columbia and the Washington to the Pacific Northwest and China. Joseph Barrell was a successful merchant. Born in Boston, Ma. in 1739, his father was a merchant and shipbuilder. He, like his brother, became involved in mercantile operations. William F. Sturgis, born in Barnstable (Mass.), 1782, married Elizabeth M. Davis in 1810.
