Woodman, Cyrus, 1814-1889. Papers, 1833-1889.
Title:
Papers, 1833-1889.
Papers of a resident of Mineral Point,Wisconsin and Cambridge, Massachusetts, consisting of bound volumes of personal and general business letters, letterpress copies of letters sent, and correspondence for several business enterprises with which Woodman was connected. Six volumes of correspondence and accounts, 1840-1844, deal with Woodman's services in northern Illinois for the Boston and Western Land Company. In 1844 he settled at Mineral Point and joined with Cadwallader C. Washburn in operating a real estate office. The firm entered public lands for settlers, located military warrants, acted as agent between eastern landholders and western purchasers, and also invested in and managed its own extensive agricultural, timber, and mineral lands. A great portion of the correspondence deals with these transactions, which centered at first in western Wisconsin, and spread to Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and other states. As an individual or as a member of this firm, Woodman expanded his activities into allied operations: lumbering on the Saginaw, the upper Wisconsin, the Black, and other rivers; mining in southwestern Wisconsin; establishing the Mineral Point Bank; and investing in railroad stock. From 1862 to 1864 he managed for the St. Mary's Falls Ship Canal Company its grant of pine lands in lower Michigan, and around the year 1870 he superintended the building of the Burlington and Missouri Railroad to Lincoln, Nebraska. In addition to business affairs, Woodman's correspondence contains his and his friends' expressions of opinion on banking, railroads, politics, contemporary events, and his own personal and family affairs.

Tenney, Horace A. (Horace Addison), 1820-1906. Papers, 1797-1929.
Title:
Papers, 1797-1929.
Papers, primarily correspondence touching upon many aspects of Horace A. Tenney's career as editor, member of the University of Wisconsin Board of Regents, assistant state geologist, and political leader in Wisconsin. Among the topics discussed are the development of the state constitution in 1847, the Barstow-Bashford controversy, the selection of saline lands for the University in the 1850s, the formation of the Republican Party, the Liberal Republican and Greenback movements in the 1870s; and local politics, particularly in Madison and Milwaukee. Letters from Leonard J. Farwell describe his business operations in Chicago and Missouri after his removal from Wisconsin. Letters from other pioneer newspaper men, especially Josiah A. Noonan, Horace Rublee, and Stephen D. Carpenter, show the influence of newspaper writers upon the shaping of state events. A small group of letters written by George D. Kellogg during the Civil War describe military operations in the lower Mississippi River Valley, and some routine correspondence relates to Tenney's service as paymaster of the army after 1862. After his appointment as federal inspector of post offices at the close of the war he received a number of letters from Michigan and Wisconsin regarding appointments and postal routes and expressing dissatisfaction with the mail service. Other correspondents are Edward P. Allis, Ezra S. Carr, Paul Chadbourne, Amasa B. Cobb, Edward Daniels, Cushman K. Davis, Henry Dodge, James R. Doolittle, Timothy O. Howe, Levi Hubbell, George Hyer, Solomon Juneau, Byron Kilbourn, Rufus King, Azel P. Ladd, Increase Lapham, William P. Lyon, John G. McMynn, Morgan L. Martin, O. T. Maxon, Josiah Packard, George H. Paul, John Fox Potter, Alexander Randall, Edward G. Ryan, Carl Schurz, Marshall Strong, Moses M. Strong, John Tweedy, and C. C. Washburn. The collection also includes a few letters written by Tenney to his wife in the 1870s, letters from his parents, and other family members' correspondence extending through three generations. There are typewritten copies of letters, 1797-1832, written by Cornelius Cadle, a merchant of New York City, on business and family matters, and a record of the Cadle family in England and America. Other papers include a memorandum book that Tenney kept while selecting saline lands in Pierce County in 1853; a volume of names of members of the first State Republican Central Committee in 1857 with names of voters by counties; a collection of records acquired while he was paymaster during the Civil War; a volume of reminiscences of his war experiences, written in 1874; notes on speeches and articles; and genealogical data. The few photographs were made about 1900 and show the Tenney family homestead(s?) at Bradford (now Groveland), Mass. and tombstones of family members, 1748-1803, in the Bradford churchyard.

Papers, 1774-1894.
Papers of a resident of Mineral Point, Wis., who came to Wisconsin in 1836; served as territorial surveyor and member of the territorial council, the first constitutional convention, and the state assembly in 1850 and 1856; and engaged in numerous and widespread business enterprises. His papers contain business and personal letters, memorandum books and diaries, and personal and business record books. Much of the correspondence focuses on his major business interests: land, railroads, lumbering, and mining. The land papers deal with Strong's entries and management of land for Senator Henry Hubbard and other Eastern speculators and his early surveying work in Wisconsin, including a quantity of plats and notes. There are record books and correspondence covering the operations of his own real estate office at Mineral Point, his land holdings in the lead region, in Wood and Portage counties and elsewhere in Wisconsin, and in Minnesota. Railroad papers contain information on Strong's connections with a number of lines including his presidency of the La Crosse and Milwaukee and of the Mineral Point railroad companies, and on many other phases of state railroad history from 1850 to 1870. The mining papers, dealing with operations in southwestern Wisconsin at the transition from individual to company management, also contain occasional references to mineral deposits in Dodge and Douglas counties, to Strong's interest after 1870 in California gold mining, and to the work of his son who was assistant state geologist in 1873. The lumber papers deal with Strong's operations around Stevens Point and Nekoosa, Wis. They touch upon many details of the business, such as methods, wages, personnel, and organization, stressing problems of capital and the special difficulties connected with lumbering on the Wisconsin River. Political letters run throughout the collection, covering both Strong's participation in and his consultation with colleagues on sectional and party affairs, and legislation affecting business interests. Also present are personal and family letters.

Title:
Papers of William Silliman Hillyer, 1822 (1861-1874) 1931, [manuscript].
Correspondence, military papers, speeches, photographs, printed material and memorabilia. Military papers of Hillyer include district provost marshall reports; special and general orders of Grant, Sherman, Hillyer and others, especially one of congratulations on Port Gibson; passes; accounts; oaths of allegiance; and a receipt for Ulric Dahlgren's ring. Correspondence of Hillyer, his parents, children, and Grant chiefly pertains to the Civil War. There are discussions of the secession riots in St. Louis, and Grant's "Jew Order" of Dec. 17, 1862; a denial of Grant's drunkeness at Ft. Donelson; references to various services by blacks; and descriptions of the battles of Iuka, Holly Springs, Campbell's Station and Chickamauga, and of the Chattanooga campaign. Of unusual interest are a signed copy of Grant's letter to Simon B. Buckner demanding unconditional surrender at Ft. Donelson; a draft of a letter from Grant to Henry Halleck asking either relief from Command or full restoration to it; a letter of Grant's discussing his plans for the Vicksburg campaign; and a photocopy of Robert E. Lee's April 9, 1865, letter asking for a suspension of hostilities with a forwarding note by E.O.C. Ord mentioning Sheridan. Other Civil War papers concern a Union Army scout; a claim from a spy near Richmond who supplied information for Hugh Kilpatrick's Rappahannock raid; the military service of John H.H. Ward; the Senate investigation of George K. Leet; Hillyer's connection with Mann's Accoutrement Manufacturing Company; and a reunion of the Army of the Tennessee. Hillyer family letters include considerable correspondence between Anna Rankin Hillyer and Julia Dent Grant; and correspondence of Hillyer's father from Henderson, Ky., 1825-1833. There are impressions of a Mississippi voyage to New Orleans, 1834; Lafayette College, 1842; a temperance speech by Richard Johnson, 1842; Washington, D.C., 1868-1869, including Grant's inauguration, and visits to Johnson, Grant, and Hancock; and Sewanee and the University of the South, 1873. Additional items of interest include an 1870 letter from Horace Greeley mentioning Hillyer's Congressional nomination; a lampoon of Lew Wallace; and an account of how New York Daily News reporter Benjamin Wood scooped the news of Andrew Johnson's acquittal.
