The papers consist of correspondence, financial papers, diary, a manuscript autobiography, photographs and memorabilia. The major part of the papers is made up of Schuchert's professional correspondence while curator of the geological collections at the Peabody Museum at Yale (1904-1923). Subsequent correspondence is related to his work in the field of paleontology. Also in the papers is the incoming correspondence of Charles Emerson Beecher, Schuchert's predecessor at the Peabody Museum. Schuchert's autobiography (ca. 300 pages) was first written in 1917 and revised in 1940. His photograph albums contain pictures of geological expeditions (ca. 1890-1910) as well as personal and family pictures.

One of the seminal figures in the emergence of the Modern or Neo-Darwinian Synthesis during the mid-twentieth century, George Gaylord Simpson (1902-1984) helped define the unique contribution made by vertebrate paleontology to the life sciences. A specialist in Mesozoic and early Cenozoic mammals, Simpson's contributions to the fusion of Darwinian natural selection and Mendelian genetics were both empirical and theoretical, culminating in his major works and . From his posts at the American Museum of Natural History (1927-1959), Columbia University (1945-1959), Harvard (1959-1967), and the University of Arizona (1967-1984), Simpson became one of the most influential paleontologists of the century, helped in part by his ability to write successfully for both a technical, professional audience and a popular audience. A collection of glass slides showing views of Peru and other parts of South America makes up a part of the visual documentation. Other illustrative materials are maps, clippings, scrapbooks, and photographs of the sites, of Quechua Indians, and of Peruvian artifacts. Among the prominent members of the expeditions were: Isaiah Bowman, Orator F. Cook, George F. Eaton, William G. Erving, H. W. Foote, Herbert E. Gregory, Edmund Heller and Philip Ainsworth Means. Correspondents included scientists and government officials both in South America and the United States. Among these are: Sir Clements Markham, Alberto A. Giesecke, Edward C.
