Title: Letters and letterbooks, 1776-1800.

Consists of letters that deal mostly with the building of Barrell's home, Pleasant Hill. While some of the letters describe the construction process, others were written in Barrell's efforts to acquire building materials and furnishings for the house. Elements of the house came from everywhere; for example, looking glasses from France, and carpets and composition ornaments from England. Barrell also devoted considerable energy to his garden, ordering fruit trees in large quantities. Letters mentionthe large garden and greenhouse, foreign and exotic plants, and Dutch gardeners. Material relating to architectural and business transactions is also included.

Includes correspondence, accounts, and receipts related to the voyages of the Columbia and the sloop Lady Washington to the northwest coast of America, the Pacific islands, and China to trade sea-otter furs. Correspondents include Joseph Barrell, Robert Gray, John Hoskins, John Kendrick, Thomas Randall, and the merchant firm of Shaw and Randall. There is also an 1817 deposition by Francisco de Paula Marin concerning lands that Kendrick purchased in Nootka Sound (British Columbia).

A photographic album consisting of 24 photographs documenting the psychiatric hospital, McLean Hospital, when it was located in Somerville, Mass. The photographs show the hospital grounds and the exterior and interior of the buildings. The main building, now demolished, was designed by Charles Bulfinch for Joseph Barrell.

Papers of the ship Columbia, related to her second voyage (1790-1793) to the Northwest Coast of America, the Pacific islands, and China to trade sea-otter furs. Papers include bills and accounts for provisions, cargo, out-fitting the ship, tools, work, a list of officers and crew, and orders to Captain Robert Gray. Many items are addressed to Joseph Barrell, one of the ship's owners.

Deblois, Gilbert, 1725-1791. Gilbert Deblois ledger book, 1769-1792

Title: Gilbert Deblois ledger book, 1769-1792

Ledger book kept from 1769-1776 by Boston, Mass. merchant and loyalist Gilbert Deblois records accounts with Boston residents and British Army and Naval officers for sundry goods, linen, fabric, and clothing. Of particular interest are the accounts with British Army and Naval officers during the Siege of Boston. The ledger was discontinued in 1776 with the evacuation of Boston and the removal of Gilbert Deblois to Halifax, Canada, however, entries were made by an anonymous person as late as 1788 upon the collection of outstanding debts. Daily cash book entries record the amount of cash received, 1773-1776. Also included is a petty debt record kept by George Deblois, Jr., 1788-1792, recording the sale of goods including fabric, ribbon, sundry items, and clothing to Boston residents including James Bowdoin, Jabez Hatch, David Cobb, Joseph Barrell, Thomas Handysyd Perkins, and Christopher Gore, among others.

Correspondence and photographs relating to the publication of The Correspondence and Journals of Samuel Blachley Webb, edited by Worthington C. Ford (1893). The correspondence concerns Ford's efforts to locate and gain access to letters written by Webb and his brother-in-law Joseph Barrell. Some of the letters are from Mary and Charles Barrell, grandchildren of Joseph Barrell, concerning the Barrell-Webb family and the attitude of J. Watson Webb toward his Barrell cousins.

Whole and partial letter books, journals, a ledger, a summary of letters received, a personal account book, and other papers of, or related to, the firm of John de Neufville & Son (1780-1853). Letter books (1780-1786) contain copies of correspondence mostly addressed to merchants in Boston, Newburyport, other places in New England, Philadelphia, and occasionally to persons in Baltimore, Albany, Virginia, and South Carolina (3 v., 1,500 p. total). Letters pertain to commercial matters, shipments of goods, debts, dangers to shipping, frequent references to the war, actions of the British, friendly relations between the U.S. and the Netherlands, naval activity, political affairs, etc. The summary of letters received, 1780-1782, is in French (183 p.). Journals (Feb. 1780-May 1785) and ledger (Jan. 1780-Jan. 1782) record accounts primarily with American merchants; in Dutch (3 v.). Personal account book of Nancy de Neufville (1806-1820) records amounts paid for items such as fabric, sewing notions, shoes, entertainments, charitable giving, etc. Other papers include claims made for money owed the firm (1807), a contract in Dutch between John and Leonard de Neufville and Jean Rolland (1783), and an accounting of claims made against the U.S. government (1853).
