Barrell-Webb papers, 1891-1893.

Correspondence and photographs relating to the publication of The Correspondence and Journals of Samuel Blachley Webb, edited by Worthington C. Ford (1893). The correspondence concerns Ford's efforts to locate and gain access to letters written by Webb and his brother-in-law Joseph Barrell. Some of the letters are from Mary and Charles Barrell, grandchildren of Joseph Barrell, concerning the Barrell-Webb family and the attitude of J. Watson Webb toward his Barrell cousins.

Samuel Blachley Webb was born in Wethersfield, Connecticut on December 15, 1753. His mother later married Silas Deane, whom Webb served as private secretary. James Watson Webb was born in Claverack, New York on February 8, 1802. Webb's military career included service in Illinois during the 1820s. In 1827 his journalistic career began with the acquisition of the New York Morning Courier. In 1829 he acquired and merged the New York Enquirer with the Courier. Joseph Barrell was a successful merchant. Born in Boston, Ma. in 1739, his father was a merchant and shipbuilder. He, like his brother, became involved in mercantile operations. In 1764, he married Ann Pierce. He was listed as a member of the Sons of Liberty in 1769. Barrell's first wife died and in 1771, he married Hannah Fitch.
