Three volumes of notes taken from lectures and reading over an extended period of time and bound together at a later date. They are not bound in chronological or subject order and display a variety of foliation and pagination on the formerly independent items. The main subjects are medicine and chemistry, with additional notes on logic, mathematics, and moral philosophy that are probably from Champney's college studies and earlier than the first noted date of 1794. Medical material includes notes from lectures by University of Pennsylvania professors Benjamin Rush, Adam Kuhn, and William Shippen. Reading notes refer to medical and chemical works by William Cullen (1710-1790), John Huxham (1692-1768), Colin Chisholm (1755-1825), Antoine-François de Fourcroy (1755-1809), and Jean-Antoine-Claude Chaptal (1756-1832). Champneys notes that his notes on Chaptal were made on board the frigate Philadelphia in 1800.

Manuscript notes, taken by students from 1783 to 1810, on lectures covering the subjects of general medical knowledge, the practice of physic, and the diagnosis of clinical cases. Some remain undated and unsigned. Items 12, 13, and 16 contain lecture notes on the practices of chemistry. Item 14 contains a "Table of Fever" drawn on the inside front cover with a drawing of a clinical thermometer. Item 15 (very fragile) includes one set of leaves on the history and government of Pennsylvania. Item 11, third volume, includes a list of domestic medicines inside the front cover. Item 4 includes lecture notes from Dr. Adam Kuhn (1741-1817) on the treatment of diseases incident to children. Item 12 also contains notes from the lectures of Dr. William Shippen (1736?-1808). Among the names appearing in various volumes are Moses Bartram, Robert G. Maxwell, James Overton, Constans Curtin, William Simonton, D. Gilder, Christopher Heydrick, and Dr. John Spangler. Items 17, 18, 19, and 20 mention numerous doctors in Rush's day and their treatments for various diseases and ailments. Item 20, Christopher Heydrick's notes on Rush's lectures, includes lectures on typhus and influenza describing Philadelphia epidemics in 1771-1772 and 1789 (v. 1); and treatments for tuberculosis, smallpox, and measles with an account of the measles epidemic in Philadelphia in 1789 (v.2). Item 21, Rush lecture notes transcribed by William Jackson, Jr., 1804-1805, includes notes on the faculties of the mind--memory, imagination, understanding, will, passions, and moral faculties plus physiology (v. 1)--and differences between men and women. Also includes diseases and their treatments (v. 2).

Bache Papers-Castle Collection, 1766-1946.

Title: Bache Papers-Castle Collection, 1766-1946.

The collection contains personal papers, correspondence, notes, financial papers, genealogical research, and printed materials of the Bache family, desendants of Benjamin Franklin. The papers of Franklin's grandson, Benjamin Franklin Bache, are at the core of the collection, covering almost the entire span of his life. Personal papers include schoolboy essays and notes, and correspondence with his grandfather, father and mother, and with his future wife Margaret Hartman Markoe. The collection also includes a journal Bache kept while in Geneva and Paris (1 August 1782-14 September 1785), in which he described the people and events he saw, including Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and John Jay. There are also many papers in this collection relating to the estate of Francis Markoe in St. Croix (V.I.), to which Margaret and her children were heirs. Bache's professional papers include letters from Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Robert Morris and James Monroe. His son Franklin Bache is also well represented, and his personal papers and correspondence are joined with records of his professional accomplishments and honors. There are smaller amounts of material for succeeding generations, including Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867), Thomas Hewson Bache (1826-1890), Charles Meigs Bache (1829-1890), Albert Dabadie Bache (1832-1895), and Franklin Bache (1869-1946). The collection also includes approximately 70 imprints and bound volumes.

Castle-Bache Collection, 1683-1922

Title: Castle-Bache Collection 1683-1922

A leading Jeffersonian journalist, Benjamin Franklin Bache was the eldest son of Richard and Sarah (Franklin) Bache, and grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Educated in France and Switzerland, Bache returned to the United States with his grandfather in 1785 and by 1790, had established himself as editor of the , a newspaper that became one of the most important voices for radical Republicanism in early national Philadelphia. Bache died in the yellow fever epidemic of 1798. His son Franklin Bache became a noted physician and chemist, teaching at the Franklin Institute (1826-1832), the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science (1831-1841), and at Jefferson Medical College. The Castle-Bache Collection contains a diverse assemblage of both personal and professional correspondence relating to the grandson of Benjamin Franklin, Benjamin Franklin Bache, with interesting material relating to Bache's son, Franklin, and later generations of the Bache family. The collection also includes genealogical materials on the Franklins, Baches, Markoes, and cognate families, as well as a selection of miscellaneous printed materials. Aurora

Miscellaneous items include Hutchinson's marriage certificate; genealogical data on the Hutchinson, Hare, and Pemberton families; and stock certificates, 1857-1872, of the McKean and Elk Land and Improvement Company. Materials dated post-1793 are to and from Hutchinson family members.
