Title:
Robert C. Edwards presidential records. Correspondence. 1960-1979, 1971-1975.
The series may be divided into the following general categories: instructional programs and facilities development, relations with the state of South Carolina, and student affairs. Efforts to improve the quality of programs and instruction at Clemson may be found throughout the series in records from consultants and organizations such as Cresap, McCormick, and Paget; the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education; the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges; the Southeastern Library Network; and the Southern Regional Education Board. Files documenting improvements to the facilties include those on the Stadium, Lee Hall, and the Clemson House. Other buildings constructed were the Fike Recreation Center, Jervey Athletic Center, Rhodes Hall, and the Forest and Recreation Resources building. A number of files concern topics related to the State of South Carolina: the Atlantic Coastal Plains Regional Commission, the South Carolina Forestry Commission, and the Water Resources Research Institute. A small number of files document affairs of concern to students: student government, fraternities and sororities, censorship of publications, and campus unrest in 1971. Also are letters on various topics from students. The files of the Atlantic Coast Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Association contain minutes, reports, bulletins, and rankings of schools in the conference. Much of the correspondence documents the decision of the University of South Carolina to leave the ACC and Clemson's decision to remain a member. Also included are files on financial aid awards and the method of awarding them, recruiting violations, and problems encountered in complying with civil rights legislation.

Title:
Papers of the Duncan, Kinard, Sanders, and Tucker families, 1843-1961.
Correspondence, scrapbooks, and photographs documenting five generations of descendants of planter and physician Francis Marion Tucker (1828-1862) and his wife, Addie Medora Nesbitt Tucker (1833-1907); consisting primarily of the Civil War letters of Tucker, and the twentieth-century business and professional letters of civil engineer Daniel Tompkins Duncan (1895-1977). Tucker's letters to his wife discuss management of overseer, slaves, and their plantation in Spartanburg District; camp life in Columbia and Charleston, S.C.; hiring of substitutes; patriotic fervor of the times and the divided opinion within the ranks re legality of Governor's calls to deploy the state militia in the service of Confederate Army in Virginia. at Manassas, 30 August 1862. Other topics discussed by Tucker include battles, June 1862, on James Island, S.C., including Tucker's low opinion of the Confederate military leadership; and battles at various places in Virginia, before Tucker's death. Other materials include an 1889 stock certificate, Ninety-Six Manufacturing Co.; student papers, ca. 1890s, from Columbia Female College, Columbia, and Wofford College, Spartanburg, S.C.; a description of a visit to the 1893 Chicago World's Fair; program, 1900, of music by the Ninety-Six String Band, Fellowship Academy, Greenwood County, S.C., and an undated genealogy of the Kinard family. Twentieth-century materials chiefly document the career and professional affiliations of civil engineer Daniel Tompkins Duncan and the construction of hydroelectric facilities on the Saluda River, including the Buzzards Roost dam project, Greenwood County, S.C., and the unsuccessful attempt by Duke Power to block construction, 1935-1937.

Duke Endowment Archives, bulk, 1902-2008 and undated, 1925-2006
Title:
Duke Endowment Archives, bulk 1902-2008 and undated, 1925-2006
The Duke Endowment was established by James Buchanan Duke as a perpetual charitable trust in 1924, with the following types of beneficiaries, mainly residing in North Carolina and South Carolina: non-profit hospitals and child care institutions; educational institutions; and rural churches of the Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South (now the United Methodist Church). The Duke Endowment Archives span the years 1902 to 2006, with the bulk of the material dating from 1925 through 2006. The collection documents the administration of the corpus of the trust and the charitable contributions made to the categories of recipients named in the Indenture and Deed of Trust establishing The Endowment. The majority of the records are arranged into series that reflect the organization of the institution, including the Board of Trustees, Treasurer's Office, Controller's Office, Investment Office, Education Division and Committee on Communications, Health Care and Child Care Divisions, and Rural Church Division. Smaller series, documenting such other activities as record-keeping, publications, and history of The Endowment, include: Central Files, Oral History Project, Trust Under Will, Publications, Miscellaneous, Photographic Materials, and Audiovisual Materials. The collection consists of the following types of materials: correspondence; minutes of meetings; financial records; applications for assistance from hospitals, child care institutions, and churches; statistics; publications; oral history tapes and transcripts; architectural drawings and blueprints; photographs; audio cassettes; and miscellaneous records and papers. The geographic focus is primarily North Carolina and South Carolina.
