Stephens was a steady contributor to literary magazines and wrote some 25 books, primarily romantic treatments of English and American history.
Ann Sophia Stephens was born in Connecticut in 1810. She married Edward Stephens in 1831. Beginning in 1835, she edited and wrote for several magazines over the course of 30 years. She also published several long novels. She died in Newport, Rhode Island, 20 August, 1886.

A letter (1864) written by Henry King from Strawsburg, Va., gives details of the deaths of Stephens and Denson and the condition of surviving members of Company C.

Most of the letters were written by Wilson Yandell, Lunsford Pitts Yandell, Susan Wendell Yandell, and Lunsford Pitts Yandell, Jr. The letters consist mostly of family news but also contain information relating to a variety of other topics, including medical practice, physicians of Ky., medical politics at Transylvania and the Louisville Medical Institute, state politics and economic conditions in Ky. and Tenn., references to important citizens in Louisville and Lexington, the career of David W.
