The papers consist of various letters, documents, and manuscripts, either written by or signed by Adams, or both, as well as an engraved portrait of Adams. Most of the items date from before or after Adams's presidency, with a number of the items dating from his years as Secretary of State. The collection consists of two manuscripts, an Address to his "Friends and fellow citizens of the County of Norfolk," Massachusetts, dated October 24, 1843, and an Address at the laying of the cornerstone of the Cincinnati Observatory, dated 1848; seven documents, including a passport for Joseph Heatly Dulles, dated April 6, 1822, a copyright claim of William B. Fowle, dated February 28, 1823, and one of John Trumbull, dated 1820, a letter of patent, dated April 11, 1825, and signed also by Henry Clay and William Wirt, a sailing permit to Hiram Covele, commander of the Alliance, dated October 25, 1828, and signed also by Henry Clay, notes on the Josiah Hooker Trust, dated October 17, 1831, and two resolutions concerning slavery, dated 1844; 21 letters, mostly ALSs, with some LSs and ALs, dating from 1796-1843; and a signed engraved portrait. Correspondents include Charles Francis Adams, John Quincy Adams's son, Barbara O'Sullivan Addicks, Messrs. Baring Brothers & Company, Joseph Blunt, Tristram Burges, Richard Forrest, Henry Gassett, Rufus King, General Lafayette, and his son, George Washington Lafayette, Walter Leake, Govenor of Mississippi, Charles Edward Lester, Jan Luzac, Thomas McKean Thompson McKennan, Chandler Price, Thomas J. Lester, whom Powers rejects as "a scroundrel capable of any amount of falsehood"; the London exhibition and the American tour of the sculpture the GREEK SLAVE; European reaction to the outcome of the American Civil War; the art community in Florence; Powers' 1846 trip to Turin and Rome; and his health, family, and personal ambitions. The Sparks collection consists of original and transcribed historical documents and correspondence, chiefly concerning the American colonies and the original thirteen states, collected or transcribed beginning in 1819 by Jared Sparks. The collection includes the papers of Sir Francis Bernard and George Chalmers, letters of Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, the journals of Thomas Ainslie, the Board of Trade, the New York Provincial Congress and Conventions, as well as the papers and records from state public offices, among many others.
