Born in Griswold,Conn., July 15,1815; admit to the bar, but afterwords studied two years in Auburn Theological Seminary & began to preach; gave up on account of feeble health; went to England, 1840; was for 6 years U.S. consul in Genoe, Italy; wrote many books & articles on Italian literature, etc., died in Detroit, Jan.29, 1890.
