The John Tabor Kempe Papers contain primarily court case records (12 boxes) for the colonial province of New York during the tenures of Attorneys General William Kempe and his son, John Tabor Kempe. The bulk of these records date from 1752 to 1774, and concern civil disputes, often over land ownership, tenancy and estates, as well as criminal acts. Also included in the papers are professional correspondences of both John Tabor Kempe and William Kempe, court agendas and fees, legal papers, land and property records, financial records, government documents, and a photograph.

John H. Lydius of Albany, New York sold land to James Havens of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, as noted in a land deed dated September 29, 1761. A deed on January 9, 1773 shows that Jacob Marsh of Socialborough, Vermont purchased six hundred acres of land for three hundred pounds from Goldsbrow Banyar, and seventeen other New York grantees. Two deeds February 26, 1773 and December 13, 1773, both signify the sale of land from Jacob Marsh of Clarendon, Vermont to Oliver Arnold also of Clarendon.

Deed book containing 42 deeds for property located in colonial Vermont, issued in 1762 by John Henry Lydius of New York. Deeds are for a sixtieth share of the land in township 28, called Hartford, located today in the vicinity of Ira Township in Rutland County, Vermont.

John Henry Lydius deeds, 1732, 1761.

The folder contains a photocopy of a 1732 deed to two tracts of land that John Henry Lydius obtained from the Mohawk Indians. One was the "Otter Creek tract" in Vermont, containing 1440 square miles (24 wide by 60 miles long), extending from the mouth of the Otter Creek southward almost to the southern boundary of present-day Rutland County. The ownership of the Otter Creek lands was vigorously disputed between New York and New Hampshire in subsequent years, with Ethan Allen getting into the fight. The "Wood Creek tract", was a smaller parcel located in the area of Whitehall, New York. Also included in the collection is a land indenture from Lydius to Abraham Greene, dated 23 November 1761, for 1/60th part of the town of Cambridge, located in the Otter Creek tract, thought to be in the vicinity of present-day West Rutland and Proctor. Cambridge was to become part of "Socialborough", an area extending from the southern line of Monkton, Vermont to Clarendon, Vermont.

The papers of Samuel Avery consist of three boxes of business and legal correspondence focusing on land speculation in Vermont (and thus, New York and New Hampshire) during the years 1748-1798. The earliest piece in the papers (February 1748) is an interesting bit of poetry written by "Scribe" Avery at age 17 to an apparent love by the name of Nancy (box 3: folder 1: item 1). This is one of the very few items of family (or almost family) correspondence in this collection. The papers generally reflect Avery's role as a land agent and include deeds, mortgages, receipts, statements and accounts of all kinds. Correspondence is addressed to Groton, Conn., Norwich, Conn., Westminister, Vt.and various New York locales as Avery travelled, buying and selling land. Papers relating to three cumbersome legal cases - Humphrey Avery (Samuel's eldest brother) vs. John Holt, Cornelius Bogardus, who sought claims to lands around New York City, and the Cornelius Brauer case - have been separated from other correspondence. Many of the legal papers are duplicates.

1762 copy, presumably by Ezra Stiles, then a minister in Newport, R.I., of the 1732 deed from Mohawk chiefs living on the Mohawk River to John Henry Lydius of Albany, N.Y., of specified lands east of Lake Champlain, with a map of "Col. Lydius's Patent 1732" on the verso. Also a sheet dated Feb. 11, 1774, containing two maps. One side shows the locations of the Lydius Vermont claims. Outline map on verso, of the British middle colonies, highlights the Susquehanna Claim in Connecticut and northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as tracts in Vermont.
