The archives consist primarily of music (both manuscript and printed), correspondence, photographs, sound recordings, books, newspaper clippings, printed programs, drawings, and engravings. They span years from the Middle Ages to the present, and include documents of composers, musicians, and literary figures, among others. The music in the collection includes holograph scores or sketches, both published and unpublished, as well as a number of copyists' and printed scores, transcriptions, and arrangements by composers and musicians such as Beethoven, Bloch, Brahms, Chopin, Franck, Mendelssohn, Puccini, Rimsky-Korsakov, Schoenberg, Webern, and many others. Also included is historically important correspondence, such as letters of Metastasio and Handel. Some composers (Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern, for example) are represented by numerous manuscripts. A sample of other composers, musicians, and literary figures that are represented by both music and nonmusical materials includes George Auric, Johann Sebastian Bach, Béla Bartók, Hector Berlioz, Georges Bizet, Pierre Boulez, Anton Bruckner, Charles Burney, Feruccio Busoni, Claude Debussy, Frederick Delius, Hermann Hesse, György Ligeti, Federico Garca Lorca, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Marice Ravel, Rainer Maria Rilke, Frank Wedekind, Kurt Weill, and Gioseffo Zarlino.

Concerning [in 1840] the piano-vocal score of [Die Zerstörung Jerusalems], asking him to send copies of it and the choral parts to Steinheim in Altona, to his brother Joseph Hiller in Frankfurt am Main, and three to Hiller himself so he may send a dedication copy to Mendelssohn, saying that he hears the most extraordinary things about Mendelssohn's new work, mentioning [Ferdinand] David, [Heinrich Conrad] Schleinitz, [Otto] Nicolai's Templario (which will be given at La Scala on the 15th), Max Bohrer, [Theodor] Döhler, Soldini, etc.; and asking [in 1841] Kistner to send to [Francesco] Florimo, the librarian at the Florence conservatory, a list, with prices, of the most important scores of Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Weber, Mendelssohn published by Kistner, and saying that Steinheim does not wish to claim authorship [of the libretto of [Die Zerstörung Jerusalems] and asking if Kistner can remove his name from the title pages of the full and piano-vocal scores.

Expressing regret that Mlle Goddard did not engage M. Gouffier, but not having heard from Belloni and not being able to wait longer, she has left that day for Bade, where she is engaged by Bénazet, saying that he will have heard the decision of the Chambre des Pairs (House of Lords) concerning foreign composers--the works of Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, and Mercadante are now at the mercy of pirates--, that it is only Prussian, Saxon, and French composers who are protected by the treaties of 1846 and 1852, that those treaties do not affect publications before those dates: thus, [Meyerbeer's] Huguenots, Robert [le diable], all of Auber's operas, and all the works of Chopin, Thalberg, Doehler, Bériot are "du domaine," that Austrian, Italian, and Spanish composers must live in England for a few months before their rights are protected, telling Escudier to be on his guard in his future dealings with Ricordi, etc.
