The collection is organized into four series which are generally arranged alphabetically by author or title. The Works series contains drafts of over 350 of Nash's poems and published collections, many of them holographs, as well as typed and copied versions with edits, printer's marks and notes. In addition, an untitled and unpublished novel, lyrics, scripts, and a few essays and speeches are scattered through the series, which is arranged alphabetically. The Letters series consists almost entirely of 577 letters from Nash to his wife, Frances Leonard Nash. Additionally, there are letters to publishers, friends, and in-laws. The Recipient series is composed of letters and telegrams from friends, fans, editors, and publishers to Nash. These include Larry Adler, Spiro Agnew, Nicolas Bentley, Gelett Burgess, Curtis Brown, Ltd., Walt Disney, Corey Ford, Eugene McCarthy, Groucho Marx, Marianne Moore, Christopher Morley, the New Yorker, Charles G. Norris, S.J. Perelman, J.B. Priestley, John Pudney, John Updike, E.B. White, and P.G. Wodehouse. The Miscellaneous series contans a wide variety of material ranging from honorary degrees awarded to Nash, a journal of publishing informationfor all of Nash's published poems, certificates of membership in various societies, wedding license and program, and biographical information and obituary notices for family members. A series of letters from Edmund Strudwick, Nash's father, spans 1882-1924. Also included in this series are galley proofs for E.B. White's collection of verses, "The Fox of Peapack and Other Poems," letters from Frances L. Nash to her mother, and minutes from the Nassau and Suffolk County Deviled Ham and Lake Ronkonkoma Club meetings.

Title: The Reverend Warren Debenham Comedy Sound Collection

The Reverend Warren Debenham Comedy Sound Collection documents American comedy from the early 1930s through 2006 and consists of long playing albums and compact discs of live performances, spoken word recordings, humorous music, musical theater, and film soundtracks. In addition to recordings of individual comics, the collection contains compilations of various comedians. Also included are compilations of radio series, among them "Our Miss Brooks," "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show," "Duffy's Tavern" and "The Phil Harris and Alice Faye Show" that were broadcasted during the early 1930s through the mid 1950s. Other long running radio programs, in particular "The Chase and Sanborn Show," "Amos 'n' Andy," and "The Bickfords" are contained in the collection. In addition, recordings by George Jessel, Victor Borge, Jack Benny, Red Skelton, Florence Foster Jenkins, and Spike Jones provide insight into the influence of vaudeville and burlesque that characterized American humor during the first half of the 20th century. Also represented is the work of Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, Moms Mabley, Erma Bombeck, David Frye, George Carlin, and many other comedians who, during the 1960s and 1970s, found their material in the social, political, religious, and cultural changes that were occurring during that time. Among the comediennes who challenged the conventions of motherhood, wives, and respectable women were LaWanda Page, Fanny Flagg, Belle Barth, and Pearl Williams. The influence of these entertainers is reflected through the work of later generations of comics, among them Sam Kinison, Martin Lawrence, Jerry Seinfeld, The Queens of Comedy, and Chris Rock. The collection also contains recordings of comedy troupes, especially The Capitol Steps, Second City, and Firesign Theater. Subjects cover such topics as politics, relationships, religion, parenting, adolescence, and African-American culture. Genres include adult entertainment, satire, comedy songs and humorous music, improvisational, impressions, stand-up, telephone pranks, observational, regional, ethnic, and dark humor.

Arranged in eight main subseries: biographical materials, educational materials, correspondence, teaching materials, research and consulting files, addresses, television and radio program files, and publications. The biographical folders include many curricula vitae (some include schedules of lectures given outside Northwestern) and clippings concerning Evans' speeches and appearances on television and radio. Of special interest are two diaries kept by Evans. The general correspondence primarily includes incoming letters concerning Evans' writing, teaching and public appearances. Also in the general correspondence is material related to Evans' role in the television program, "The $64,000 Question." Of special interest are thirteen letters from Groucho Marx primarily concerning Evans' publications and Marx's appearance on Evans' television show, and a long exchange between Evans and Ashley Montagu. The teaching materials pertain primarily to Evans' enormously popular course, Introduction to Literature. In addition to his teaching at Northwestern Evans was a leading member of the faculty of the Famous Writers School from 1958 to 1972. The school prospered until an expose of its shortcomings by Jessica Mitford appeared in the ATLANTIC in 1970. The papers document Evans' central role in the School's public response to Mitford's accusations. The radio and television material deals primarily with "Words in the News" (1962-1964) and "Down You Go" (1951-1956, 1961-1963). The bulk of Evans' papers relates to his voluminous writings. These included columns or individual items for newspapers, articles for popular magazines and scholarly journals, and books. Of special importance, among material relating to his published books, are the substantial files on THE NATURAL HISTORY OF NONSENSE (1946) and THE SPOOR OF SPOOKS (1954). Materials concerning the DICTIONARY OF CONTEMPORARY AMERICAN USAGE, (1957), co-authored by Evans and his sister Cornelia, include not only much background material for this best-seller but also copious notes for a second edition. Included in the material pertaining to unpublished books is a substantial amount on the DICTIONARY OF SYNONYMS AND SIMILARS. Manuscripts of several unpublished works on language, e.g. "Book of English Usage", and "History of English Language", are also included.

Weekly 30-minute NBC radio broadcasts, featuring classical and light classical music, which began on Apr. 29, 1940 and continued until 1958. In September, 1959, the Bell Telephone Hour made its television debut as a monthly musical special. It remained a regular television program until April 26, 1968. Library's holdings incomplete. Broadcasts chiefly originated from New York City, sponsored by the Bell Telephone Company (American Telephone and Telegraph). Each 30-minute program generally features a guest singer or instrumentalist, with the Bell Telephone Hour Orchestra, conducted by Donald Voorhees, and the Bell Telephone Hour Chorus. Frequent guest artists include Marian Anderson, Robert Casadesus, Nelson Eddy, Josef Hofmann, Fritz Kreisler, Oscar Levant, James Melton, Grace Moore, Ezio Pinza, Lily Pons, Bidú Sayão, Gladys Swarthout, John Charles Thomas, Helen Traubel, and Eileen Farrell. David Rose (1910-2006) was a well-known courtroom sketch artist whose work documented some of the most notorious trials of the last half of the twentieth century: Klaus Barbie, Patty Hearst, Sirhan Sirhan, members of the Manson family, John Z. De Lorean, Timothy McVeigh, as well as crimes and criminals which were more well-known by their nicknames: The Hillside Strangler, The Night Stalker, the Bob's Big Boy Murders, etc. During his life, Rose also worked for the Hollywood studios as an animator, layout artist, publicity artist, art director, illustrator, and designer.

Title: Sombrero Playhouse papers 1961-1964

The Sombrero Playhouse, founded in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1949, was for many years a popular venue for touring productions featuring prominent performers, including a number of Hollywood luminaries. Founded by artistic director Richard Charlton, the Sombrero Playhouse became during its heyday perhaps the major performing arts center between Dallas and Los Angeles, attracting celebrity players such as Groucho Marx, Tallulah Bankhead, Ginger Rogers, Gloria Swanson, Bob Cummings, Celeste Holm, Shelley Winters, Margaret O'Brien, ZaSu Pitts, Pat O'Brien, Walter Pidgeon, John Raitt, and others. These actors usually toured in established works, but new plays were occasionally tried out at the Sombrero, such as William Inge's NATURAL AFFECTION, which premiered in Phoenix in 1962, a year prior to its Broadway run. The Sombrero Playhouse papers consist mostly of clippings from Arizona newspapers and magazines dated between 1961 and 1964, but primarily from 1962 and 1963, concerning current productions at the Sombrero Playhouse. Much of the material consists of feature stories on the star performer of the current show, usually including biographical information about the performer along with excerpts from a recent, local interview. There is also general information about the theater and its founding artistic director Richard Charlton, about the Galaxy Gallery, an art gallery adjacent to the theater operated by Richard's wife Helen Charlton, and the Backstage Club, a restaurant in the same complex which began as a club for actors appearing in Sombrero productions. The material from 1964 speaks of plans to build a new Phoenix Performing Arts Center.

Attwood's career in magazine and newspaper journalism is thoroughly documented: foreign correspondent based in post-war Europe; European, national, and foreign editor of "Look" magazine (1951-1961); editor-in-chief, director, vice-president of Cowles/Look Publications (1966-69); and president and publisher of the newspaper "Newsday" (1971-79). Also present is correspondence with readers and editors, concerning Attwood's books, including "The Reds and the Blacks" (1968) which was banned in Kenya. The collection also documents Attwood's government service. His ambassadorships in Guinea (1961-63) and Kenya (1964-66) are represented by memoirs, memorabilia, and correspondence including several confidential discussions of the policies, goals, and ambitions of the Foreign Service during the Kennedy and Johnson Administrations. Also included is information from Attwood's work as media representative in the U.S.'s delegation to the 20th General UNESCO Conference in Paris, where he worked for a compromise "Declaration on the Mass Media" which wouldn't be injurious to the freedom of the press. This conference and Attwood's later service as Commissioner of the U.S. National Commission for UNESCO are documented by correspondence, memoranda, conference documents, and Congressional testimony. Other of Attwood's international activities represented in the collection include four trips to Cuba since the Revolution, a visit to China in 1971, his relationship with Prince Norodom Sihanouk, and membership in the Committee on East-West Accord. His national activities are documented by files on the presidential campaigns of Adlai Stevenson in 1956 and 1960 and that of John Kennedy, for whom Attwood served as a speech writer in 1960. Later campaigns are also covered. The processed portion of the papers is summarized above, dates 1940-1984, and is described in the register. Additional accessions date 1940-1980, 1987 and are described below.
