Broadley, Alexander Meyrick, 1847-1916. Collection of autograph letters, ca. 1822-ca. 1902.
Title:
Collection of autograph letters, ca. 1822-ca. 1902.
An edition of William Powell Frith's 'Autobiography and Reminiscences', with 'Further Reminiscences' in 9 v. extra-illustrated with ca. 160 autograph letters plus ca. 400 engravings, prints, newspaper clippings, postcards, broadsides and photographs. Letters (including seven from Frith) are from artist contemporaries of Frith's (painters, engravers, etc.) and talk about work in progress, the business of the Royal Academy or furnish biographical information. The letters (and corresponding photographs and illustrative materials) are bound-in where individuals are mentioned in the text; the index, occasionally, can be used to locate these. Other letters are from notable authors, actors, clergymen and politicians; some are addressed to Ernest Gambart. Individuals represented in the collection include E.A. Sothern, Joseph Nollekens [with pencil sketch], William Etty, Thomas Faed, Paul Delaroche, E.J. Poynter, Cardinal Manning, J.E. Millais, S.L. Fildes, Lady Burdette-Coutts, Shirley Brooks, John Doran, W.H. Hunt, Henrietta Ward, L. Alma Tadema, Edmund Yates, G.A. Sala, Mrs. S.C. Hall, J. Etty, William, 1787-1849. William Etty correspondence, 1807-1849, undated.
Title:
William Etty correspondence, 1807-1849, undated.
William Etty's correspondence concerns the British painter's work, his social engagements and other matters. Letters sent by William Etty are addressed to various correspondents, including undated letters to the painters Thomas Uwins and Sir Martin Archer Shee and a letter dated 1845 to John Varley. Included is a letter to Robert Bolton (1826) in which Etty comments on his pursuit of fame and choice of subject matter. In a letter to Richard Coles (1847), Etty provides detailed information on his Joan of Arc paintings, including the source of inspiration for the works and comments on the research he conducted in France. He also remarks that all his large paintings were intended to impart a moral lesson and elaborates on the message contained in several of his most important works. Letters received are primarily from British artists, such as Sir Francis Chantrey, C. R. Leslie, Shee, Sir Charles Barry, Daniel Maclise, A. W. Pugin, Sir Charles Eastlake, Benjamin West, John Constable, David Wilkie, Clarkson Stanfield, William Mulready and Sir Thomas Lawrence. Many of the letters are of a fairly routine nature but Leslie's (1844) praises Etty's work in fresco; Eastlake's (1849) compliments Etty on a recent exhibition; and Lawrence's (1807) comments on his own portrait painting. Pencil sketches of female nudes, apparently by Etty, appear on the letters from Stanfield and Mulready. The clippings comprise a tearsheet from Picture Post and an obituary. Included with the archive are seven items of miscellaneous correspondence, including a letter dated 1853 by a second William Etty and correspondence from other British artists, such as letters by the painters Richard Redgrave and John Dearman, which appear to bear no relation to Etty.
