Century Company records

Title: Century Company records

The Century Company published the Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, which was widely regarded as the best general periodical of its time, performing a role as cultural arbiter during the 1880s and 1890s. It was founded in New York City in 1881 and also published the children's magazine St. Nicholas, dictionaries, and books. The Century Company records date from 1870 to the 1930s and chiefly contain correspondence with contributors, readers, public figures, and literary agents. A number of manuscripts and proofs in the collection are extensively edited and taken with annotations on letters provide a detailed record of the outlook, standards, and functions of the company.

Correspondence, clippings, and scrapbooks largely concerning his military career and his years as chief of the Philippine Constabulary. The collection includes bound volumes of memoranda, reports, and other documents of the Philippine Constabulary bearing in part the title "Compilation of papers on Japanese propagandaism" and relating to Philippines-Japan relations. Brown University related subjects include alumni affairs including the Associated Alumni of Brown University and the Loyalty Fund; financial affairs and fund raising; students, including the curricula for freshman (1922) and housing and commons; the effect of World War I on Brown University; the Womens' College; appointments of professors and members of the Corporation; the library; and Hermon Carey Bumpus. There was discussion about whether the Womens' College should be included in the general Brown University catalog. There are reports and accompanying correspondence from the following committees: Aims and Problems of Brown University (1922); Plans and Policies (1921-1924); "What Brown Stands For" (1914-1919); Dormitory (1924); and Library (1916-1924). The topics discussed in the class of 1880 correspondence include personal news about class members and their families, plans for reunions, the class prize fund, the class library fund, and donations of books to the John Carter Brown Library. Franz Boas Papers, 1862-1942

Title: Franz Boas Papers 1862-1942

During the half century leading up to the Second World War, Franz Boas helped to define academic anthropology in the United States. Trained as a geographer at the University of Heidelberg, Boas worked initially on the Inuit of Baffin Island and subsequently on the cultures of the Indians of the Northwest Pacific Coast, becoming a leading figure in American anthropology by the first decade of the twentieth century. As Professor of Anthropology at Columbia University, Boas made significant theoretical contributions to ethnology, linguistics, and physical anthropology, helping to ingrain the four fields approach in his discipline and introducing the concept of cultural relativism into wide currency. He was, as well, a committed Socialist and an ardent opponent of both racism and fascism. This collection includes correspondence that Boas carried on with his colleagues in anthropology, as well as with those in the other social sciences and sciences. This correspondence is rich as a source for twentieth-century historians interested in "radical" social causes, since Boas was a socialist and an outspoken voice for progressive social causes.
