Zechariah Chafee correspondence and reports, 1880-1943.

Consists of correspondence documenting Chafee's role as a member of the Brown University Corporation and as an alumni of the class of 1880. Brown University related subjects include alumni affairs including the Associated Alumni of Brown University and the Loyalty Fund; financial affairs and fund raising; students, including the curricula for freshman (1922) and housing and commons; the effect of World War I on Brown University; the Womens' College; appointments of professors and members of the Corporation; the library; and Hermon Carey Bumpus. There was discussion about whether the Womens' College should be included in the general Brown University catalog. There are reports and accompanying correspondence from the following committees: Aims and Problems of Brown University (1922); Plans and Policies (1921-1924); "What Brown Stands For" (1914-1919); Dormitory (1924); and Library (1916-1924). The topics discussed in the class of 1880 correspondence include personal news about class members and their families, plans for reunions, the class prize fund, the class library fund, and donations of books to the John Carter Brown Library. In 1917 the university established the Brown War Records Bureau, whose intention was to "collect and preserve a record of all Brown men who are serving in the present war".
