The History of the Spanish Southwest collection.

Title: The History of the Spanish Southwest collection. 1500-1699.

This collection includes microfilmed documents which relate to the Coronado Expedition and to the administration of new Spain in the 16th and 17th centuries. The greater portion of the original documents are included in the collections of the Archivo General de Indias in Seville, Spain. The collection includes accounts of voyages by Spanish explorers, service records of individual members of the Coronado expedition, a history of New Spain and New Mexico, reports from Coronado and others to the King of Spain, and various legal reviews of appointed officials in New Spain. Additionally, an inventory of maps and plans of New Spain is contained in the finding aid as well as a selected bibliography listing books about European exploration and discovery, Coronado's expedition, and Coronado's route.

Summary: Collection consists of professional and personal papers of Adolph and Fanny Bandelier, typescript copies of Charles F. Lummis journals (1919-1920), Adolph Bandelier memorabilia, publications, and miscellaneous papers. Professional papers include: the Bandelier journals containing numerous sketches and notes on archaeological and ethnological sites in New Mexico, Arizona, Mexico, Peru, and Bolivia (1880-1911); handwritten transcriptions by Fanny for the journals pertaining to New Mexico and the Southwest (1880-92); manuscripts by Adolph concerning various subjects; translations by Fanny and others of Spanish documents; and manuscripts concerning Spain's presence in the New World, New Mexico history, and lecture notes on various archaeological and ethnological subjects. Adolph's manuscripts concern: the Pueblo Indians; the colonization and establishment of missions in New Mexico, Chihuahua, and Sonora; and Captain Gaspar de Villagra. Bulk of the personal papers consist of Fanny's correspondence, diaries, composition books, prose, and clippings. The typescript journals of Charles F. Lummis discuss the daily events at El Alisal (his home) from 1917 to 1920. Adolph memorabilia consists of correspondence pertaining to the Bandelier memorial, a biography of Adolph (1966), a scrapbook with material dated ca. 1885 to ca. 1905, and various other materials. Publications consist of pamphlets and books from the Bandeliers' personal library that pertain primarily to Bolivia and Peru. Miscellaneous papers contain the Bandeliers' travel documents and various certificates of membership and recognition issued to Max Frost or Fanny Bandelier. Also included are Adolph's colored drawings, correspondence concerning the Bandelier journals and manuscripts, and a list of documents used by Adolph in his research (most of which are at the Archdiocesan Archives in Santa Fe).

Explorations history collection

Title: Explorations history collection

The collection consists of assembled materials from various sources regarding the history of early exploration of the land that would become Kansas in the 19th century. It includes information regarding 18th century French and 16th century Spanish explorations. Types of materials include translations of documents and private papers, correspondence, copies of original materials in French, histories, and other such materials. Individual explorers represented in the collection include Sieur Etienne Vengard de Bourgmont, Pierre Margry, Claude Charles du Tisne, Le Page du Pratz, and Francisco Vasquez de Coronado's expeditionary members, including Friar Juan de Padilla, Antonio de Mendoza, and Juan Jaramillo. Also included is a telling of "the arrival of four savages of the Mississippi in Paris" in 1757 and some information and correspondence regarding Spanish explorations in the 18th century. Most of the French materials were translated by Edward Kilian.

Title: Coronado Entrada scrapbook, 1940.

Scrapbook of clippings, press releases and a few photos about the July, 1940 production of the Coronado Entrada in Colorado Springs. The staged recreation of the 400th anniversary of the Coronado expedition through what is now the southwestern part of the United States was held in Penrose Stadium and included hundreds of local residents as cast members. Zelle Wade was the publicity director for KVOR Radio and for the local Coronado Entrada, and likely compiled the scrapbook.
