The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. Adolph Bandelier was a prominent archaeologist in the Southwest and Latin America. His second wife Fanny Ritter Bandelier was intimately involved with his professional career, most often as a translator. The Bandeliers' were in Spain, locating and translating Spanish documents pertaining to the Southwest, at the time of Adolph's death in 1914.
