There are letters between him and other family members while at college and during his brother George's illness. Autograph albums include two volumes kept in 1856 and 1861 by students at Jefferson College. These albums include engraved portraits of faculty members and autographs and messages from students and faculty. The 1856 album is inscribed D.V. Campbell. The 1861 album contains some references to the Civil War including one signature from a student at Camp Wilkins in Pittsburgh.

The majority of this collection consists of correspondence related to the families of David B. McCreary and his daughter, Sophia McCreary Clark ("Sophy"), both of Erie, Pennsylvania. David and his wife, Annette, corresponded with family and acquaintances throughout the mid- to late 19th century, including the Civil War era and the Spanish-American War era. The letters of Sophy, her husband Henry, and their daughter Annette span the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Album of cartes de visite, many with identifications, assembled by a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Washington and Jefferson College (or a relative). Also some images of women and children, including one postmortem photograph of a young girl.

The James B. Richardson, III photographs and slides includes late nineteenth and early twentieth century photographs and lantern slides. The photographs are mostly studio portraits of individuals from Pittsburgh, western Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. Some of the photographs are identified, including photographs of the 1873 graduating class and professors at the Western Theological Seminary. All of the lantern slides are identified and depict locomotives and industrial scenes in Alabama, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, as well as the Point and the Fort Pitt block house in Pittsburgh. One of the seven albums is identified: it contains images of Washington and Jefferson College faculty and students from 1864. One of the oversized folders contains a poster entitled The Great "Welcome Week" Steamboat Race, a race between the Homestead and the William Larimer Jones that took place on the Ohio and Monongahela Rivers on May 21, 1949.

Chiefly family and professional correspondence but also includes printed material, writings and speeches, scrapbooks, diaries, and photographs. The collection primarily pertains to the Farrar family and to Preston C. Farrar as an English teacher at Allegheny High School (Pa.), in New York City, and as professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Much of the Correspondence Series consists of personal letters among family members, primarily written to Preston C. Farrar; his wife Edna P. Farrar; brother Samuel Clark Farrar, Jr.; sister Josephine; father Samuel Clark Farrar; and mother Ettie Farrar. However, the series also documents the careers of Samuel Farrar, Sr. and Preston Farrar as educators. Business letters from Samuel Farrar concern real estate investments in Pennsylvania and New York that father and son held in joint ownership. The Writings and Speeches Series contains writings by Preston C. Farrar on teaching literature, English, and education. The Scrapbooks and Clippings Series contains items which pertain to school laws, family events, and local Allegheny elections. The Diaries Series contains Preston C. Farrar's diaries while he attended Washington and Jefferson College, 1887-1891. The Photographs Series contains pictures of family and friends, 1890-1920's. The Printed Material Series includes drama and opera programs for New York City theaters, collected by Edith P. Farrar, 1899-1957.

The Philip S. Hench Walter Reed Yellow Fever Collection documents the work of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission, the legacy of the commission’s discoveries, the lives of individuals who were connected to the commission, and twentieth century campaigns to shape public memory of the commission. Items in the collection date from 1800 to 1998, with the bulk of the items dating from 1864 to 1974. A wide range of formats are represented in the collection including, but not limited to the following: articles, artifacts, audiocassettes, bills (legislative records), biographies, charts (graphic documents), correspondence, diaries, editorials, interviews, journals (periodicals), magazines, maps, medical records, military records, negatives (photographic), notes, photographs, reports, reprints, scrapbooks, and speeches. Unique materials in the collection are supplemented with copies of original documents and photographs housed in other institutions (e.g the U.S. National Archives). Most of the materials in the collection were collected or created by Nobel laureate Philip Showalter Hench while researching the history of the U.S. Army Yellow Fever Commission.
