Title:
Records of the Office of the Secretary of Defense. 1921 - 2008. Audio Recordings. 1945 - 1965. THE ACTOR
This program explores the question: What is an actor? Various actors and actresses, such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Vivien Leigh, Lionel and Ethel Barrymore, Tallulah Bankhead and Humphrey Bogart discuss their views or deliver recitations from their most famous performances. Their performances are then analyzed by authorities such as Broadway producer, Mike Todd, press agent, Dick Maney, anthropologist, Doctor Hortense Powdermaker, psychoanalyst John Gustin and publisher Leo Schull. William Saroyan, syndicated columnists Leonard Lyons and Hy Gardner, Rocky Graziano, Peter Ustinov, Dore Schary, Alfred Hitchcock, Walter Kerr, John Carradine, Michael Redgrave, Sir Ralph Richardson, Ralph Bellamy and Joseph Mankiewicz, give their opinions on the thespian fraternity.

The collection consists of selected essays and articles written by Bloch on subjects ranging from Isadora Duncan to philosophy to Eastern (Balinese, Cambodian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Javanese) dance and culture; artwork by Bloch featuring Duncan dancers, dancers and other performers in the Far East, and performers during the Harlem Renaissance; photographs of various subjects, including Balinese, Chinese, Javanese, and Kathakali dancers, the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, New York, chorus girls from the Harlem jazz scene, Nyota Inyoka, Ethel Barrymore, and portraits of Bloch in various costumes and genres, including Duncan, Spanish, Javanese, and flapper poses; and newspaper and magazine reviews featuring Bloch. The bulk of the material covers from the late 1910s through the Harlem Renaissance. Also includes correspondence to, from, and regarding Bloch, notably Nyota Inyoka, George Cukor, and R.H. Macy & Co.; publicity and programs for Bloch's performances and exhibitions; subject files on people and events of significance to Bloch; and audio recordings of jazz music. There is almost no material on Bloch's family (parents, husbands, children) or early education; the correspondence series covers only the earliest years of Bloch's career. While the artwork included in this collection contains nudes and portraits, it mainly consists of dancers and performers. Bloch used as her subjects Duncan dancers, Eastern dancers, New York City Ballet dancers, and most notably dancers, singers, and musicians of the Harlem Renaissance.

Its jurisdiction covers both actors and stage managers in the professional theater. The collection contains approximately 110 black and white photographs (and one negative), ranging in size from 3x5 to 8x10 inches. Although it encompasses a miscellany that includes images of AEA offices, AEA meetings, actors and actresses, and theaters, very little of Equity’s early history is represented.

Selznick, David O., 1902-1965. Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Title:
Studio archive, 1904-1980 (bulk 1936-1955).
Contains records documenting every aspect of David O. Selznick's Hollywood studio operations including script development, production, publicity, finances, and distribution. The records follow film's pioneer days in New York through the heyday of the studio system in Hollywood, to the rise of television. Besides Selznick's independent productions such as A Star is Born (1937), Gone with the Wind (1939), and Rebecca (1940), the archive documents his association with three major studios, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, Paramount, and RKO. Arranged according to the departmental division of Selznick's studio, the archive traces the evolution of films from story purchase through script development, casting, design, production, exploitation, distribution, and reissue. Though most of the materials document Selznick's independent career, there are also records concerning his personal affairs, his father's career, as well as films Selznick developed but never produced. The archive touches on virtually every major Hollywood person, studio, and event of the early 20th century. The archive is highlighted by David O. Selznick's personal files, found in Series I, and arranged in 28 sub-subseries. These records document Selznick's personal involvement in every aspect of his business and chronicle his life. Found in this subseries are clippings, confidential and personal files, coproduction and loanout files, correspondence, calendars, financial and legal files, interoffice files, MGM, Paramount, and RKO files, Myron Selznick estate files, photographs, safe deposit files, story files, talent files, and writers files.
